I had a chance to see one of these as a kid. It was at Sun-N-Fun flyin in the 70’s. It was definitely ahead of it time.

Always wanted to build one ... but as you point out, that FAA aspect makes it almost impossible. But just imagine the possibilities it would give you !!!

How I've seen it... Everything in a aircrafts will try and kill you, if not now well in a few bits then. Average consumer would have a good ol time trying to keep it maintained or forking money out regularly

@@colinday8334 Yes indeed on the maintenance aspect ... best have an A&P License and a Bank full of money. I'd fare better than most ... Aerospace Engineer with 4 decades of experience and learned to fly "old school" in a Bell 47G ;)

I had a dream of a bomb being dropped by an army helicopter on a city and in the air was a flying RV that ended up making it out. Weird dream…

Wild Guess of 20-30 Radial S-58's?? YEAH...probably Per US State, I have seen a dozen in use listed here in Minnesota at one operator (though it was a couple years ago, and I cannot remember where it was now)...There is a couple of KZitem videos where one operator had a Dozen or so as well...I know the Turbine Powered ones are far more popular, but the piston S-58 is still more popular than one might think.

I always liked how the S-58 Sikorsky helicopter looked. I’m a bit of a fan of radial engines, and the pilots sitting up high. After turbine engine came along, helicopters became almost standard shape.

You don’t really need an oven. The stove works as a heater too with using cross ventilation for the CO2. 😏🖖🏼🇺🇸

The Sikorsky 61N would of been the ideal choice for a flying RV. Would sleep 8 in a folding bunk configuration, have area for a kitchen, dining and bathroom.

Its an amphibious helo as well but a set of floats with wheels would make it very versatile. Have a couple of John boats slung up against the bottom between the pontoons with gear secured in them. Would be well worth the $2.5-$3.5 million. I've seen them as low as $1.25m on ControlAir and Trade-A-Plane

The passenger version of the Bell 47 (Bell 47J) used as the Presidential helicopter is a four seat not a two seat helicopter as detailed in the video thus it was able to carry three passengers. However be it three passengers it still was not really big enough for Presidential duties though as detailed in the video.

The aux fuel tank is on the port side only as the cabin door is located on the starboard side and fitting one there would not only block it but make escape in a crash impossible and rather hot.

I remember seeing that as a kid and thought at the time that it'd be really cool. But when you consider operational costs/hour and other cons like finding a spot big enough or level enough to set down in and the issue of rotor wash. There are also flight restrictions in national parks and recreation areas. You can't just go where ever you want in those big things. Then there is the noise. Those big helicopters were not a comfortable ride with the massive engine separated by a thin wall of aluminum and some insulation. They're also slow by aviation standards.

Certainly a pipe dream lol … and if I didn’t mention it in the video you sure are right… besides BLM and national forest land there’s not a lot of places to take a heli home because of noise, rotorwash, regulations etc… cool idea but didn’t pan out 😭

This wasn't the only flying RV. In the 50's, Glenn Odekirk took a PBY Catalina flying boat and turned it into a camper seaplane. Thomas W. Kendall built a few more to sell around the same time. LIFE Magazine did an article on Glenn Odekirk's plane named Landseaire. Here is a link to pictures of Landseaire - (jobbiecrew.com/incredible-flying-yacht/) Here is a link to one that got shot up by Saudi soldiers as it was flying around the world - (www.reddit.com/r/aviation/comments/g2lny2/from_dream_to_nightmare_the_sad_end_to_thomas/)
