Hi , I was a member from HMM- 163 from Sept. 67 to Sept 68 in Vietnam . We operated in the I Corps area and our base was 15 miles below the DMZ. We saw a LOT of action. We did troop insertions , extraction , Sea air rescues , as well as resupplies . We did Keasaun while it was under siege , the Rock pile and of course Happy ( helicopter) Valley . We had some great crews and pilots , even our CO flew and was a great guy to serve under Colonel., Louis Schwindt.we were the -Ridge Runners- our squadron received 2 Presidential unit citation by the time I left . Semper Fi . PS they fly the V- 22- Osprey now. We are Yankee Poppa my bird was YP- 5 .

Hi Fred and Greg. This episode had great use of inserted videos. I also like the walk around at the end...excellent music. Thanks guys for telling the stories of these war birds. Chris

My father flew these in Vietnam and elsewhere. The squadron was known as HMM-364 when flying the H-34 and H-46. HMM stands for Helicopter Medium Marine. When the squadron transferred to V-22’s the name was changed to VMM for Vertical. Also, my dad has said many times that the helicopter could not carry more than 8 combat loaded Marines. They were big men with heavy loads on their backs. The narrator I think was a little unclear when he said that this helicopter did not see extensive combat. With the Marine Corps it most certainly did. He has the wounds and the medals to prove it. My father flew in country with HMM-363 & HMM-364. He is also still alive and sharp at 82 years old!

I just absolutely LOVE aircraft (BOTH Airplanes and Helicopters) with BIG, FAT, CURVY FUSELAGE Designs!! The Helicopter in THIS video (Sikorsky H-34 Choctaw) and Airplanes such as the F2A Brewster Buffalo, Grumman F4F Wildcat, the Grumman F6F Hellcat, the Vought-Chance F4U Corsair, all have a BIG, FAT FUSELAGE that I just ABSOLUTELY LOVE the ASTHETICS (PHYSICAL APPEARANCE of)!! I sometimes wonder if it's because I'm a MAN; probably because MOST men are PHYSICALLY attracted to women with BIG CURVES. I do not really know for sure, but something about these BIG, FAT, CURVY FUSELAGE aircraft (BOTH Airplanes and Helicopters) really GRAB my attention and "Turn Me On", so to speak. I DO NOT mean that necessarily in a "SEXUAL" context. Afterall, I am speaking about Airplanes, Heli-kee-pot-ers, and Automobiles, too [such as the 1930's Ford, Chevrolet, and Plymouth COUPES, as well as the 1950's FAT-FENDERED Ford and Chevrolet PICK-UP TRUCKS), as opposed to ACTUAL WOMEN!! However, these designs really do COMMAND my ATTENTION and APPRECIATION as FORMS of BEAUTIFUL ART!! I do NOT mean this in any kind of perverted way at ALL; that is really NOT HOW I mean this!!

The terrain of the war zone looks far more lovely, lively and beautiful than the stupid machine manned by highly educated zombies. How did they think that a people living a different life and economic system were a threat to their existence. I've no clue after reading from every available source.

This may be a silly question, but where does the connection between the engine and rotor go with the flight deck right on top of the engine?

It passed right through the back of the cockpit. Crazy.
