Almost instantly the 550 has established itself as the 'go to' vintage machine, it'll be interesting to see if the 165 gets the nod when an additional 10 hp is needed. Great video Dan.

I love watching your videos dan. Not only because you use Masseys and I'm a Massey fan myself, but also because of the vintage tractors alongside the more modern tractors and it shows there's still a place for the vintage tractors and machinery in the 21st century. Keep up the great video content 👍🏻

Cracking video, well done. Great to see the 550 earning some keep. Father looked as happy as a pig in the proverbial ! Takes me back to the '70's with a Ford 6710 mowing, a 700 driving the forager and a 35 & 135 trailering. Oh how times have changed. Looking forward to the picking up etc.

Great video Dan,as a Massey Ferguson man just noticed your hay and silage equipment is of claas equipment and don’t know much about them here in the states i guess Deere,Kuhn,and Krone have the market,so maybe in time how about a review on the Claas equipment always thanks again.

The 550 handles the Tedder well we have a 4 rotar Kuhn Tedder and we run that on our ih 454 goes to how what the smaller tractors can do and like you we leave machines on tractors like that and you can just jump in and go

Tedder is ‘walking’ down the field. Possibly due to a combination of slack stabiliser chains on the tractor and lack of or poor design or setting of whatever anti-walking mechanism the tedder employs.
@philipoconnor2236

Was wondering about that. Do you reckon she shouldn't be moving side to side like that?

Great video! Lovely heavy crop by the looks of it and still leafy. Can tell by engine note that 550 is getting a good workout with that 4 rotor and the heavy swaths! But no harm to give the little Perkins a good run out now and again! You'll have a lovely clamp of silage
@raymondrobinson4047

@@philipoconnor2236 It shouldn’t. The external linkage stabilisers on the tractor should hold the lower links tight and centred, which would help. Various tedders have different ideas about stopping the ‘walking’. Fella have a friction device on the bottom hinge. Other brands have various geometrical and mechanical methods. The wider the tedder the bigger the problem. The reason they have the pivot is so that the unit can steer to a considerable degree without lifting the tedder out of work. The tractor linkage should be ’stabilised’, which is to say ‘held central’ on such implements though. Soil engaging implements are the main exception where the links should be free to sway within certain limits. The 550 factory external stabilisers were extremely light duty with very fine threads on the rods and adjusting turnbuckle, similar to late build 135’s from 1971 on, and I would be amazed if this tractor hasn’t had several sets in its life. Best idea is to replace the chains with box sections that slide one into the other with plain pins inserted to limit sway.

An 80 hp tractor with a 6 rotor would not use more fuel per acre tedded. A 100+hp with an 8 rotor machine would be very efficient and a massive time saver. The 10 minutes taken to swap tractors for one of the bigger idle ones in the shed would be insignificant in comparison. Tedding is a tediously slow job with narrow implements and a lot of acres to harvest. I’d be using the spreading mower/conditioner to cover the whole field surface, thus saving that first tedding completely. Its a complete job that takes hours and hours, possibly many days depending on the acreage, that is surplus to requirements with the right mower and/or settings. The first tedding could then replace the second tedding as the only tedding operation required. For lighter crops such as second cut in drying weather, no tedding operation would be needed, just mowing/conditioning/spreading in one operation, then raking a couple of hours before harvesting/carting.

@@hedydd2 It's because of the danger of broken parts flying around from the fast spinning equipment. I've experienced it myself. Because of the closed window it will deflect and not pierce or hit your body. The window may break, but you are safe(er).
@hedydd2
2 жыл бұрын
@@rypkepaulusma What sort of spinning implements are you experienced with? In 50 years of driving tractors, some twenty on tractors that had no back windows ever fitted, I’ve not experienced anything like that. The worse implement for throwing stuff at the tractor is the flail hedgecutter, but that is a whole different kettle of fish.
@rypkepaulusma
2 жыл бұрын
@@hedydd2 Well, the implement on the video for example, and mowers. Or things flying around when raking or discing. I had iron flying around multiple times in the 30 odd years I worked on the farm, and nobody was hurt because of the closed windows. Same thing with tractors without rollbars I see all over KZitem. A friend of mines live was saved because his tractor tipped over, but the rollbar kept him from getting trapped underneath and prevented him drowning. Don't ever take safety too light. You only have one life to live.
@hedydd2

@@rypkepaulusma Only hobby/collector’s tractors do not have roll over protection in the UK, with some exceptions. It is a legal requirement. Never had a tedder tine get anywhere near the tractor let alone up to driver level. Imagination is a fine thing but not in extreme. Up until 1970 very few tractors had cabs and even until Q cabs in 1975 few of those had rear windows. I’ve never before heard of anyone mentioning such a hazard apart from flail hedgecutting where wire mesh or perspex is even recommended to stop glass being broken and the driver from both twigs and, very seriously, any flying wire. I’ve mowed literally tens of thousands of acres with drum and disc mowers over the years and never had a broken knife hit the tractor let alone the back window, which is kept closed to reduce noise and have never heard of such a thing either. In fact a flying knife would not be stopped by glass anyway and I remember a neighbour one mowing with a JF drum mower who was stopped by a householder from a house about 50m away across some waste ground. The knife had flown across the waste ground, shattered the house window and embedded itself in the far wall of their lounge. It is physically impossible for a knife to achieve a steep enough angle to hit the driver due to the guards over the cutterbar or drums. Has it ever happened in modern times? I doubt it.
