Saddest part is Harry, or more like Cherly's interpretation of him, is happy about that and becomes a memory, (a thematic point of the game with memories and places of the past becoming ice), Cheryl really loved her dad in this interpretation of the SH franchise. It's also a neat contrast with the ending of Cheryl thinking she must carry the burden of her dad's death, there Harry insists in her forgetting about him, thus turning into ice and breaking (a forgotten memory/emotional scar)

I love the emotion in the scenes where Cheryl confronts the memory of her father, but I´d wish the cutscene of Kauffman speech would exclude the part "your mother isn´t the monster you think she is" if you get the ending where she beats Harry. That it´s actually a good reason to develope a hatred feeling towards a parent.
@Krieklow

To be fair, unfortunately, some children try to go to the only help they can get, this being Kaufmann, to see there side of the story and be heard. But there are times where there voices are ignored and they painstakingly have to walk back to their place of suffering. If you get the ending where the mother is abusive, it makes Kaufmann saying this hurt all the more because in the end, like everyone else, he just doesn't understand. Often, this is what drives teens to extreme depression and sometimes, more dire self-inflicted consequences.

Part of me wonders if we’re meant to take the home tapes from each ending as a part of a fully connected story. Harry and Dahlia have marriage issues, Harry cheats on her with the 2 women and make the sex tape, Dahlia finds out and that’s when the fight happens.

+Squid Kid Yeah in comparison to the previous Silent Hill games, it lacks that creepy and disturbing imagery that Japanese games are known for. It does make up for it with a story just as good as Silent Hill 2's narrative, and the whole psychological game mechanic was the most unique aspect. So if you thought Until Dawn was the first to do this, you're wrong. Too bad the execution of the psychological mechanic is half-ass'ed in both games. But then again, I can't blame the game or developers really. If you went all the way, you would have to create multiple campaigns. Instead we're stuck with the "allusion" choice rather than making choices that actually change the game entirely. The only differences you will notice is in cut-scenes, your choices don't change the game mechanically, you're chased by the same pale monsters, with small minuet changes to how they look.
@loren5432
8 жыл бұрын
+triedge763 Like you said, you can't really blame the developers. 1-Shattered Memories was made in 2009 for PS2/PSP/Wii (consoles that have a lot of limits). You do have to give them a break here. 2-What do you mean with "allusion" choice? Of course things change according to your actions. Not only choices, but even looking at "trivial" things can affect your playthrough, too. I don't even know what to tell you, because no offense (really, no offense), but this is ignorant from your part. 80% Of the game is all about "cutscenes" which, as you said, can differ a lot depending on how you're playing, so I don't know what you're trying to get at. That's the same as saying that games like LiS don't change anything (hence "allusion") because the choices only appear in "cutscenes". The dialogue in the end between Cheryl and Harry changes too (this, of course, includes the ending), how some characters look and act change, the clothes Harry uses, the fact that you can enter a bar instead of a diner, and I can go on and on. _And I don't want to talk about Until Dawn. The "psychological mechanic" of that game was really weak in comparison to this one (it literally was "choose between spiders or snakes, period"), and the "horror" aspect of it was really weak, too (I only got scared by a cheap "jumpscare" trick in the whole game)._
@SteelBallRun1890
8 жыл бұрын
+triedge763 I don't think Until Dawn was going for psychological horror, sure the elements are there but it was never marketed as such, it was merely a fraction of the game, it was mostly going for the generic horror movie story.
@jdofthefunk

"Same pale monsters" The Raw Shocks change significantly based on your actions and observations, they can be festering and vomiting, or "sexual" looking, or these completely abstract oddities. Personally I think Harry's journey is his manifestation of spirit inside Cheryl's mind, trying to fix her up. I know it's far fetched but, maybe Harry was searching for Cheryl this entire time in order to repair her memories himself and help her with her trauma. He doesn't seem shocked when Kauffman says he's dead, so I personally think Harry knew he was dead, but focused on helping Cheryl get over him. I know it's far fetched but honestly if I found out I was dead I'd be doing mental. Of course I'm probably wrong.

This game is the most atmospheric and depressing of all the entries. I don't know, even if I'll didn't really feel the psyco-fear or disgust like the "Silent quatrology", I just felt that uncomfortable sense of loneliness and straight out sadness all around like a nostalgic depressing kinda feel. The amount of detail put into the world-building and story-telling makes this game stand out for me but could it been so much more if they had put that classic "cripple" combat, survival mechanics and actually well-tough out abominations with even more twisted Hell-frozen sequences. The music, well, Akira just nailed it what a surprise, right?
@stepdaddy5664
4 жыл бұрын
I know this is over a year old, but I agree. This could've been the best silent hill if they did the combat better (it's still my favorite by far.) The problem lies with the frozen sections. I understand they wanted to have adrenaline-pumping sequences with trying to escape from running enemies, but that's the ONLY time there's a threat. As long as there's no ice, you know you're safe; and that takes away a lot of the tension. Because these shouldn't be just sections, they should be woven into the game. And being able to use weapons would also fix the problem a bit. With that said, this is an absolutely amazing game and I'm pretty sure inspired Until Dawn, which took a lot from this game and ran far with it.
@Maxler5795
3 жыл бұрын
@@stepdaddy5664 i know this is over a year old but i disagree with you. I think the ice parts are good. I liked them a lot. You have to know your destination though so before any real threat arises pull up the map. That said, i love the game. The story, the graphics, even on a psp this game looks GORGEOUS. And its not trying to be horrifing, its trying, and little mind you, to be scary instead. Scares are what make you jump and say "damnit." Horror is what sticks with you. Shattered memories enemies, called raw shocks, actually have 4 possible designs depending on what ending you are going to land on. Theres the abstract for love lost, which look like clockwork, the diseased for drunk dad, which look all filled with green bruises, the female that connect to the sleaze and sirens ending, which look like take a guess, and finally ones that i forgot the name but are filled with holes, connected to the wicked and the weak ending.

I don't know why the fans are acting like they know how SH1 Harry was as a person when we did not see his lifestyle and did not see much if any personality. Mainly just dodgy voice acting and the same goal as we saw with SH SM; which was to find Cheryl. Obviously Dahlia and Harry had their own mates in SH1 and Alessa would have made more sense as a daughter in SH SM. This is a "reimagining" so it can change things the way it wants to. There is no rulebook on how a beloved cardboard-cutout of a character (Harry) should be portrayed in a reimagining, and if there is I have not heard of it. On a side note I agree that this would be a better standalone game rather than a SH reimagining, as it is not as twisted as the classic SH games.

To me, this game was an emotional psychological game, it's an amazing spin off don't get me wrong. The attention to detail when it came to the psychological profiling feature was neat and the story is great. However, the gameplay or the 'combat' was pretty lackluster as it was only chase sequences and the only one enemy with different variations, it was a waste especially since they could've worked on the combat similar to Silent Hill 3 and make use of the psychological profiling feature to change certain boss/monster designs depending on choices made while putting the chase sequences the original Shattered Memories had somewhere, then it would've felt familiar yet different to the fans since the gameplay just being running around seem to have alienated fans of the original trilogy of Silent Hill. Would've been a great psychological horror game with an emotional story. I wish they would remake it together with Silent Hill Origins and the original Silent Hill trilogy.

In my opinion I like the "someone has to take the blame + the sex tape or the drunk dad ending" just seems like it gives her the most closure, and she can finally move on; I'd love to hear your guys opinions if you're from the TBF+Liam play through too. XD

Many people thought SH2 was sad, but not everybody found it relatable. To me, SHSM is way more relatable to me cuz it reminds me of my family, The soundtrack of this game, best of the series, since I am a musician myself I do relate to the lyrics too.
@Silent.Heaven

It's not cause it was relatable, but because you played as a supposed good guy, but something didn't feel right. When the ending hit it felt like you didn't feel safe around your own character, I think that's one of the reasons it works so well

Just finished the game, really good. I love how everything you do effects something. I got the love lost ending. I decided to catch the rest of the endings on KZitem don't think it's worth going through again. Definately worth going through once as honestly as possible though. This game derserves kudos for pushing gaming boundries because of the whole pshychological analysis thing, sadly doesn't get any.

My dad died nearly 10 years ago, and I'm still in denial about it. Poor Heather just wants her dad back. From the look of things Delilah was the reason why Heather greatly disliked her and for why Harry would get drunk and end up sleeping with other people and finally decide to divorce his wife, but not until he made sure for his daughter to know it wasn't her fault at all.

When I went through all the different endings, I couldn't relate to any of them. 6 years later, after my parents almost got divorced, which led to fights between my dad and me, and my dad passed away a couple of months after it, I feel deep pain that I can't describe. I wonder if the writer of the story was reflecting some personal stories because this was accurate

All these endings are super depressing. It either shows Harry being a good Dad to Cheryl, Harry being a sex pest, Harry being abused, or Harry being a drunken fool. These endings are all sad because it shows how it effected Cheryl. At least the UFO Ending brings some light as it seems to be the only light hearted ending.

Ping Kerman Continuing to see any type of professional doesn't instantly mean that they're good. Many of them are manipulative; they can just as easily lead someone in the wrong direction or in circles, with the patient believing they're being helped. It happens a lot, just to make more money off of people's problems.

The whole story is fragments of memories, hence shattered memories. The ending is symbolizing of letting go of those memories instead of repressing them. When she denies the facts and accepts him as a hero, she denies the bad side of her memories and continues to live her life in denial, having never been lived.

@Deadboltt Thank you for stepping up and explaining to others that people with actual problems aren't just acting out or conflicted for no reason. Cheryl, by no means, was emo. She's a genuinely conflicted girl that has severe delusions of who her father really was, and thus she created who her father was. The player's actions really dictate just what kind of a father Harry really was.

The connection in this game is that Dahlia is Harry's wife. This game implies that all Silent Hill 1 was only a product of Cheryl's imagination to deny his father's death, she made up everything, from her mother Dahlia being a witch from a cult (the order) to the events at the Midwich School and Alchemilla Hospital. The conection in the canon story is non existing, Jodie (Harry's wife) had been dead for 3 years before the silent hill 1 timeline began. Shattered Memories is great, but not canon.

... in which he describes himself not as the father her daughter saw. He wanted to abondon her even killing her crossed his mind. But in the end he couldn't let go of her because he still loved her. It's good to know that the developers let the good old Harry return one last time. This is the true ending to the story of Alessa/Cheryl/Heather in my opinion. Rest in Peace Harry Mason.
