17:18 Sounds like the report was the Battle of Cape Esperance - the first naval victory of the Guadalcanal Campaign. The Japanese lost a heavy cruiser and a destroyer while the USN lost the destroyer USS Duncan. Two more Japanese destroyers were sunk the following day.

Amazing result you’ve achieved today. Though the fact that you sank Akagi is both an incredible achievement and also still very perplexing, since she should have already have been sunk months ago back in June 42. I dare say good sir that you have found yourself in an altered timeline, not too dissimilar from our own, but enough to major differences. Evidently in this case to your great benefit. 😉

A bit of spitballing here, but what if the Timeline changed BECAUSE of old Captain O'Hare here? What if he was so successful, because you remember he sank a BATTLESHIP a few Episodes back, that the Japanese Admiralty are much more reluctant to sortie out for fear of losing another capital ship? Maybe the Battle of Midway didn't even happen? Maybe the Kido Butai dispersed after the loss of that Fuso class (I think it was a Fuso Class), so that any submarine wouldn't be able to cripple a bunch of their precious Capital Ships? That would explain why Akagi would still be Alive, and much more heavily escorted. Not that it mattered in the end, anyway. And that could also explain why the Mark 14s are actually reliable instead of self propelled pieces of wet rat shite that failed more times than I failed Algebra. Maybe BuOrd got it's shite together instead of burying their heads up their own asscracks like a bunch of demented Ostriches.

@@wylandnares8642 : Indeed. Or - to go in the other direction - maybe in this alternative timeline, the US Navy LOST the naval Battle of Midway? (Which would have happened if the US carrier Yorktown, damaged at Coral Sea, was NOT patched up in time to take part. Enterprise and Hornet on their own in the US air strikes would certainly have sunk the Japanese carrier Kaga, but very probably NOT the Agaki, and definitely not the Soryu. (The Akagi was historically attacked by only 3 SBDs from Enterprise, which would be extremely unlikely to have made it through the Zero CAP, if the Yorktown's TBDs hadn't diverted all the Zeros' attention. And the Soryu was sunk by SBDs from Yorktown.) The 2 Japanese counterstrikes, with Akagi and Soryu taking part as well as Hiryu, would almost certainly have sunk the inexperienced Hornet, and very possibly Enterprise too. After that, the remnants of the small US fleet would have fled back to Pearl Harbor. However - the Japanese amphibious invasion of Midway Island would have been a disaster for them! Midway had far more US Marines defending it than the Japanese had planned for, large minefields, a small unit of light tanks, and the coral terrain was also much tougher for invading troops than expected. This is explained in the annexes of the book 'Shattered Sword'.) So even if the Japanese had won the naval battle of Midway, they would then have lost the LAND battle of Midway - leaving the heavily bomb and shell cratered islands still in US hands.)

Fantastic episode taff, best results seen in the campaign so far and no doubt a truly epic contribution to the war effort. Destroying that enemy carrier is going to enable easier operations for US carrier forces in the Pacific as well as being a relief for allied naval operations, probably just changed history for the better, that carrier destroyed will seriously damage the enemy's war against the allies, as well as being a humiliation to their morale and propaganda. Scratch one flat-top, fantastically executed attack. That was a close call with those enemy destroyers, always expect a struggle when enemy carriers are involved, those escorts are murder, it's also not any surprise the enemy saw your periscope, IJN night optics was incredibly effective and sometimes out saw contacts that allies could see with radar. Get yourself together lick your wounds and get back to port, the allies have good cause to rejoice and celebrate, great episode and well done mate 👍

Shooting at stationary targets DOES NOT require AOB and distance data as you DO NOT need to solve the triangle. As a result, you DO NOT need to use the ship recognition manual; it can save you from being spotted by the enemy.

@milostomic8539

I've asked the same question. Japanese carriers were lightly protected, both the flight deck and hull. They also used to store bombs and torpedoes near aviation fuel, which proved to be a very bad idea during the war.
@Cybernaut76
8 ай бұрын
@@milostomic8539 You said it, man! It was almost a total waste for Americans to send torpedo bombers and dive bombers to strike Japanese carriers during Midway. All they would have really needed was Grumman Wildcats to strafe with their wing machine guns the areas of Japanese carrier flight decks where the Jappies had stored all the munitions and aircraft fuel for their Vals and Kates. Also, the Japanese aircraft carrier Taiho could have been saved without fuel and aircraft munitions. Because of reasons quite similar, American aircraft carriers taking part in Vietnam War suffered catastrophic conflagrations in Gulf of Tonkin (all it required was one Zuni rocket short circuiting) but no American aircraft carrier in Gulf of Tonkin sank though. Just suffered very expensive damages (both in money and lives lost).
@Cybernaut76
8 ай бұрын
@@milostomic8539 Also, my logic says in the best case, it would have, in real life, required only ONE torpedo to sink Akagi class aircraft carrier **EVEN WITHOUT** catastrophic conflagration caused by torpedo hitting just where the munitions and fuel were stored. Why? Well, I have found out that despite Japanese having long traditions in naval warfare, their warship crews were notoriously incompetent in damage control as well as depth charging Allied submarines.
