Casting in these series is perfect. I so love Jeremy Brett. By far the best Sherlock Holmes. :)

John Hawksworth did an amazing job bringing this series of short stories by Doyle to actual life. I would dare anyone to say that Brett and hardwick did not bring Holmes and Watson to life.

I can certainly agree that Jeremy Brett achieves the best portrayal of Sherlock Holmes I have ever seen.

With Covid 19, I was able to watch several Sherlock Holmes' stories with different lead actors like Jeremy, I would surely miss them all: Roger Moore, Geoffrey Whitehead, Wontner, Basil Rathborn (is this the correct spelling?) Ronald Howard, Downey Jr, Cumber?

There are 17 of Doyle's works that never made it to film, as Jeremy Brett died in the 1990's. They should adapt a new series and get these stories immortalized into film!

@LaSeuleEtoile and others. Miles are still used for measuring distance in the UK. All road signs are in miles. The logistic and finacial task of changing hundreds of thousands of road signs from imperial to metric would be almost impossible. Kilometres are used in continetal Europe but not in the UK.

@nineteenthcenturyeng I think it's hilarious how SH purposely holds back from telling the Colonel (later in this story) because he doesn't like the Colonel's attitude. Hilarious. And the ...HA! after the Colonel's not liking amateurs!! Brilliant!! X-D ... ps I like your online name on youtube, I love 19th C. England too!!

Enjoyable rendering, although I rather agree the CD original story is better. Anyway - Holmes's 'simple calculation' of the train speed intrigued me, as I couldn't see that it was simple at all, however, there is a way. You count the number of telegraph posts passed in 41 seconds and multiply it by 3, so Holmes's train passed 17 posts in 41 seconds, so, 17 x 3 = 51 miles. You can estimate a 1/2 way point by the sag of the wires. A similar calculation based on rail lengths was used by drivers!

@nineteenthcenturyeng I'm not sure I follow your argument. I just said that the UK still officially uses miles for measuring road distance and that it would be costly and difficult to change over hundreds of thousands of road signs. What's "partly true"? I'm not trying to start an argument, I just don't quite follow your reply. :)

Is it just me, or do I see part one, and then no part two -- or three, or four?? These episodes are so scattershot that there's rarely any continuity. I've had to hunt down episodes to simply finish the story, not always successfully.

@koratvinnie The UK has a long tradition of refusing to accept European innovations like the metric system, decimal money, Centigrade, even the Gregorian calendar, which was rejected because it was associated with Popery! New Zealand and Australia have both managed to go metric, so it's not impossible. There was a botched attempt to go Metric under the Heath Government, but a certain Mrs Thatcher put a stop to it. Metric is slowly gaining ground, but don't hold your breath!

@thebugaj ok, i admit there have been many great europeans but doesn't it depend on how you define civilisation? If you define it in terms of technology, the europeans are ahead, but if you define it in terms of courtly manners and civilised behaviour then they're right down at the bottom (at least these days). I certainly wouldn't consider an empire to be proof of civilisation. More like exploitation, slavery and grabbing all you can get.
