I just bought a gigantic sterling silver flatware set. A woman was living in her car. She inherited it. She knew that I buy silver and so she sold it to me. I paid her nearly 100% of spot. Spot is so grossly undervalued that it was a fantastic deal. I gave her paper. She gave me metal - SILVER! It’s a silver-buyers paradise out there right now. And the sellers are using the grossly undervalued spot price to determine their ask. I’m buying all the silver that I can get my hands on. I refine gold. I use sterling silver, that I buy at estate sales, to refine the scrap gold. I recover the silver from that, melt into shot, and run it through my silver cell. The cell converts the impure silver (about 980 parts per thousand silver) to high purity four nines fine (9999 parts per ten thousand) pure elemental silver metal. The impure silver is added to the anode basket. The anode basket is suspended in the silver nitrate electrolyte. I pass an electric current through the impure silver. The silver dissolves, passes through the Dacron filter, travels through the silver nitrate electrolyte, and deposits on the stainless steel bowl (the cathode). The bowl is connected to the negative pole of the power supply. The process only deposits pure silver on the cathode. So I’m refining the impure silver, into high purity silver. When it’s full, I harvest the pure silver crystal, put it away, and forget about it. Then I repeat the whole thing again.

Good evening Sreetips. I have another idea that I think will minimizing your washing technique. Do you still have that monster Buchner Funnel? Dump in your silver and run a gallon of hot water through it and call it a day. You could reheat that same rinse wash water and rinse the second batch. Then heat a some fresh distilled water for the final rinse. You could also use that filtered rinse water for your next batch of making silver nitrate. Just a thought in reducing 4+ gallons of distilled water into perhaps a gallon and a half ish or so. Fun stuff bud.

the corrosion on the wire that's welded onto the silver bar may be due to a salt forming from the solution which migrates as time passes which then eats the wire. Same problem with road grit salt : you'd surprised how much salt moves over time with temperature and humidity level changes and brine mists. It's a big problem with electronics in road gritters, every electronic bits need to be protected in a watertight container to be sure that salt won't get to it. I suggest welding the wire on the side of the bar and place it vertically to the basket in order to keep the wire further away from the point of contact and at delay the wire's corrosion due to salt migration.

It's very interesting the different characteristic of each silver cell. Silver cell #1 seems to pack the silver more densely than Silver cell #2. And just to be clear, I'm not saying that the silver produced by #1 would actually be denser because elemental silver is elemental silver. It just seems like #2 is almost more softly packed. Like a fresh snow pack vs more icy harder snow pack. I hope that makes sense. How did they FEEL to you Sreetips? 🤔 Edit: I wrote this comment at 8:00 and you confirmed at 14:44. lol I gotta be more patient I guess HAHA! Another Edit: 18:54 I knew IT! I KNEW IT!!! Watching you do this, I wonder why you don’t have some sort of sieve. Because you could pour that silver into a sieve, and then rinse it that way because the crystals wouldn’t go through the sieve anymore than what goes out with your rinsing and you could use a lot less distilled water.

i'm wondering if de-min water would work just as well in your process as distilled water? de-min water does not react to nitric or sulfuric acids. in my former job we used demineralized water or de-min water for short to rinse parts that after the rinse went in to a heated nitric sulfuric acid bath. de-min water is highly filtered water that removes everything in the water. there are filtration systems i;m sure that can be purchased so you'd have an unlimited supply to rinse with. the parts we rinsed had holes in them that were can't be seen with the naked eye except with a microscope. around 50 microns or less. so no contaminates could be present in the water and we used 100s of gallons per 10 hour shift
