‘Simama’ in Swahili means ‘to stand’. In the chorus, the follower of Christ addresses the earth (“dunia” - which in this case means its allures and pitfalls) to remain behind as he has decided to follow Jesus. The second part is a rallying call for the body of Christ (“kanisa” - meaning church) to stand fast (“simama imara”).
Visually, the script is derivative of John Bunyan’s classical allegory, ‘The Pilgrims Progress’. Herein Christian exits the ‘City of Destruction’ where he faces violence, but only escaping with the help of an unseen guardian angel.
He travels onward through the ‘Wilderness of this World’ where he passes out, fatigued from reliance upon his world-weary vison and strength, but is once again, fortunately, rescued by his guardian angel who drags him to ‘The Land of Beulah’, a place of peace (a depiction of Christian maturity). This is likewise his last stop on his pilgrimage to the Celestial City.
‘The Pilgrim's Progress from This World, to That Which Is to Come’ is a significant work of Christian Theological Literature. Though a work of fiction, it depicts various facets of the Christian walk of faith which begins with deliverance from sin and condemnation, subsequent growth and overcoming of trials and temptations enroute to the final destination; the Celestial City (Heaven).
Hebrews 11:9-10
By faith Abraham dwelt in the promised land as a stranger in a foreign country, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise, for he looked for a city which hath permanent foundations, whose architect and builder is God.
Followers of Christ are strangers and pilgrims on this earth, seeking for a country of their own. A city with eternal foundations just like Abraham and the patriarchs, who not being bound only by the gift of Canaan, had expectations of a future life beyond this transient life, on the basis of their continuous fellowship with God. What they saw of their earthly blessings was but a microcosm of some greater gift still future, and yet present through the power of their faith.
