Landing at the Bean Fort!
We're shooting an approach into Simikot, Nepal
IMK / VNST- Simikot airport, Nepal. Nestled deep in the Himalaya at 9250ft. This one-way airstrip is in the north-west region. Currently has no vehicle access, and while there are a few tractors in the village, all of them were either hauled in from Tibet, or flown in piece-by-piece in a chopper.
We are carting chickpeas for the UN World Food Program. Our load is 1050kgs. This puts us landing at our maximum landing weight. There are no fuel facilities here, so we need to carry enough fuel to get out and back plus holding plus diversions.
Flight time from Surkhet, our departure airport, is aproximately 45 minutes.
The runway is situated east-west (RWY10-28) there is a steep rise on the western end, and a drop off on the eastern end. Because of the steep rise above the landing end- we need to alter our missed approach proceedure. Instead of a typical fly straight ahead, we need to make an immediate Left turn 180 degrees and head back down the valley. I have only had to go-around once here- for a goat on the runway!
