As we were sending my mother in law to the cremetorium my baby daughter passed wind... my mother in law always burped my daughter, then when I was putting my daughter into our car after the service a sun shaped toy that played you are my sunshine when you pulled the cord started playing... but nobody touched it, my mother in law always sang this song to my daughter... think what you may... I believe death is like having a general anaesthetic, you are there one minute then you fall asleep and unless you are awaken again you never come back... that is it.. your last breathe is all there is for you in this life

I'm only 53 and had been lamenting my age recently. Then I caught this and read a few of the comments. Not only am I ok with my age now, but figure I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be hearing exactly what I'm supposed to. The absolutely blessed voices of these two. The Lord gives out plenty of gifts and talents. However, rarely so divinely inspired as this. Beautiful is too simple a word.

Permit me to share what i found out about BOTW: early this year i stumbled over an end-time teaching in youtube by the late Rev. Neville Johnson.. towards the end, he read an "old" prophetic message from a secular song- to my surprise it was the whole lyrics of BOTW.. penned by Paul, who, in his interview could not clearly explain how he got to write it, it just popped out he said, with Art in his mind to sing it for commercial purpose (Art's voice was in his prime and sealed the message w/his heavenly voice). Written in the late 60's and released in early 70's in the time for the Charismatic revival.. The "Silver Girl" is The Bride of Christ..He (Jesus) is the one singing the message of HOPE to the true Church bec His Bride is now entering the turbulent times.. Jesus is the only true "bridge over troubled water" that can comfort and ease our weariness when darkest comes.. But hope does not dismay bec all "her dreams are on their way" - Redemption draws nigh.

These are just amongst the best songs that have ever been written in modern music history. Few performers make me cry, I'm an unreformed old style man so crying is not what I do, but I have to confess these songs just make tears pour out of my eyes. Although the vocal performances of Garfunkel are amazing and add much to the music, it really is the song writing talents of Simon. How does he go there? How does he reach into the place where the "ragged people go"? How does he know about being so lonesome to seek some comfort with prostitutes? It has to be an act of empathy as Simon when he wrote these lyrics would certain have not known about raggedness and loneliness. They are brilliant songs but, sadly, have not had the same endurance as, say the Rolling Stones or the Beatles but are at least their equal if not plunging depths that they have never achieved. I know Simon will never read these words, probably nobody will ever read these words they are a note to silence, but thank you so much for bringing these songs into the world. They do mean so much to so many.

In 1964 I was pointed to a new album - Wednesday Morning 3AM, while home for T Day from Denison U. On returning to school, I discovered my folk music partner had discovered it at the dame time. We had separately worked out our parts to Sounds of Silence ( I did Art's bit an octave down), and it became our "signature" song. We sang that song together for 58 years. Jeff Pettegrew passed away a couple months ago. It's still "our" song Jeff.
