Few people mention the brilliance of Paul Simon's guitar playing. He based several of his songs on Bach Inventionen and Synphonien, which he played with no apparent effort. His fingering was extraordinary. Often when you think you are hearing 2 or 3 acoustic guitars, it's just Paul. He had his own picking style that we all learned.

Thank you for posting this on the 4th of July, Independence Day here in the USA. On the season opener of the TV show Saturday Night Live just a few weeks after the 9/11 Attack Paul Simon, a lifelong New York City resident, performed this song by himself while standing in front of several rows of the first responders to the towers that day. When he got to the line "but the fighter still remains" - well, hard to explain the rush of emotions and meanings that song now carries for me. It brings me to tears even now just writing about it. Paul's lyrics - "I have squandered my resistance for a pocket full of mumbles, such are promises" - pure genius. Carry On!!

The la, la, la Lie lyric is intentional that the word lie is used here, and throughout the song including every time it is said brings different meanings and represents different stages of what lies the narrator is reflecting and internalizing the word lie. This is why S&G sing this part of the song throughout and at the end of the song repeatedly as the music builds, peaks then fades off. It is an integral part of the song...that has meaning.

Please react to something -- anything! -- from The Doobie Brothers. You clearly enjoy music from the 70s, so you mustn't miss out on the Doobies. They were a HUGE part of the 70s rock music scene. They were right up there with the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Chicago, Steve Miller Band, Steely Dan, Boston, Kansas, ELO, REO Speedwagon, Journey, etc. Note: they had two distinct eras, although they were always considered "rock". Early on, when Tom Johnston was in the band, there was often a stronger blues/southern/folk/country feel. Later, when Michael McDonald was in the band, there was often a stronger jazz/blue-eyed-soul/pop feel. I would recommend one (or more!) of the following. From their earlier years: Listen to the Music, Jesus is Just Alright, Rockin' Down the Highway, Long Train Runnin', China Grove, Spirit, Black Water, Eyes of Silver, Another Park Another Sunday, Tell Me What You Want, I Cheat the Hangman, Sweet Maxine, Neal's Fandango, Take Me In Your Arms. From their later years: Wheels of Fortune, Takin' It to the Streets, For Someone Special, It Keeps You Runnin', Little Darling, You Belong To Me, Nothin' But a Heartache, Here To Love You, What a Fool Believes, Minute By Minute, Real Love, Thank You Love, One Step Closer.

@@johnaldasch9966 Ooo I love Steamer Lane Breakdown. They have some terrific instrumentals on their albums. I'd love to see some reactions to it, but I find that most reactors usually tend to just react to the songs that are popular or get the most likes -- and those instrumentals are usually not that well-known. Your repertoire is all classic old songs for older generations, which is OK. I myself grew up with The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Simon & Garfunkel, Elvis, Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Led Zeppelin, The Who, & all the Woodstock bunch of singers. Today I'm 70 y-o, and although I enjoy revisiting those old-timers, I'm discovering new beautiful voices & in particular, a young stunning artist from Norway called Angelina Jordan. Watch her cover Bohemian Rhapsody (Queen cover on AGT at 13), or "I'd rather go blind" (Etta James cover). Watch her sing Billie Holiday's "Gloomy Sunday" when she was 7 or "Feeling Good" at 10. I bet you will revisit those oldies less often than you do today. As for "The boxer", it's one of my top 5 S. &G.'s songs, cause they have so many great tracks out there: "Sound of silence", "Mrs. Robinson", "El condor Pasa", "I am a rock", "America", "Cecilia", "Bridge over troubled water" & so forth...
