Yay! As a high school English teacher, I'm always happy to know that some of us leave a mark. When I was in 10th grade, I shyly approached my English teacher about analyzing the lyrics of my favorite pop songs from the 70s, 80s and 90s. I wanted to write an essay on a few of them, and I thought maybe the whole class would be into doing the same. She sniffed and said "Well now, Jane, this is not really poetry, is it?" She was all around a crummy teacher and bleak person. Whenever I invite my students to bring in songs for us to discuss, it's thrilling. They learn to find deeper and broader meanings. They gain respect for different styles and eras of music, and they learn to teach each other.

@@user-wq7ro7ck3j The song could be interpreted as the big city lights people become mute by living their lives with anonymity to all the other 'ignoring' people around. Only advertisements like neon writings and posters 'speak' to the people, but graffities too. And by this the silence grows like cancer, seperating the people. Instead they should wake up from their sleepwalking, and respect and interact with the others. Getting them out of their isolation by taking the arms and 'hugging' each other. Do not ignore the people around you, even not in the anonymity of the towns. Keep to hug and interact with living beings as a living being!

The Sound of Silence Lyrics [Verse 1] Hello darkness, my old friend I've come to talk with you again Because a vision softly creeping Left its seeds while I was sleeping And the vision that was planted in my brain Still remains within the sound of silence [Verse 2] In restless dreams, I walked alone Narrow streets of cobblestone 'Neath the halo of a street lamp I turned my collar to the cold and damp When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light That split the night, and touched the sound of silence [Verse 3] And in the naked light I saw Ten thousand people, maybe more People talking without speaking People hearing without listening People writing songs that voices never shared And no one dared disturb the sound of silence [Verse 4] "Fools," said I, "You do not know Silence like a cancer grows Hear my words that I might teach you Take my arms that I might reach you" But my words, like silent raindrops, fell And echoed in the wells of silence [Verse 5] And the people bowed and prayed To the neon god they made And the sign flashed out its warning In the words that it was forming And the sign said, "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls and tenement halls And whispered in the sound of silence"

This song is amazing because it could mean so many things, there is something in the sound of silence, but what hides in the dark may not always be the same, and the neon light may be a god or nothing but a lie. For me this song was about discovering who I was, the silence is my soul, it is full of the greatest hopes, and the darkest desires, it is not a good or bad thing, it simply *is*, the neon light is who I want to be, I created this image, and it is not purely me, it is who I am to you, as while I must be honest, everyone has an inescapable part that they simply can't show anyone. And even if I showed you everything, I simply don't have a true "personality", I am the most optimistic pessimist I've ever met, I fit in every stereotype of male teenager other than jock, and maybe a few female ones. The only definite traits I have is a litteraly deadly sense of empathy, and the weirdest inferiority complex I've heard of.

Must have been quite a time, the 1960s. Simon and Garfunkel split up right around the time that the Beatles and Crosby Stills also did. End of an era

Me heart aches. "People writing songs that voices never shared..." Words that never got the honors deserved by the gravity it carries.

The lyrics seemed simple at first, but when I actually considered them... wow. It's so deep. My favorite parts are: "Hello darkness my old friend, I've come to speak with you again." "People talking without speaking, people hearing without listening... No one dared, disturb the sound of silence." "Silence like a cancer grows." "But my words like silent raindrops fell and echoed in the wells of silence." "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls, and tenement halls." ... Basically they entire song. Also, the melody is (slightly creepy but) soothing. Thank you for the wonderful lyric video!

Yeah, my favourite parts too, plus “hear my words that I might teach you…take my arms that I might reach you”…reminds me of The Heavenly Father.
