Simon Nicol founded British folk rock band Fairport Convention, along with Richard Thompson, Shaun Frater and Ashley Hutchings in 1967.
In 1969 Fairport Convention released Liege and Lief, voted 'the most influential folk album of all time' by Radio 2 listeners, and which is today considered key in the creation of the whole electric folk music genre. Nicol later worked with John Martyn on Solid Air (1973) and played guitar on Cat Stevens' Numbers (1975).
In recent years Nicol and the band has seen a great resurgence in popularity due in large part to the success of the Cropredry Festival, held annually near Oxford, England.
