Simon, I just discovered your channel and love it. I have a experience regarding cell phones. I live in Colorado and we have a summer log home for getaways/relax. The problem with some members of the family and invited guests is there is no phone signal and no internet. Well the first day arriving in the mountains is pure hell for a phone/internet junkie. The second day is better. And by the third day these people have not only forgotten about texting, Instagram, and facebook but they have become aware of the wildlife, with only the sounds of birds, deer, and the gentle breeze moving through the pines. They also learn how to communicate one on one with each other while enjoying a nice hike or sitting around a evening fire. It's amazing.

I have a phone, and all my friends and family know this decision and, you know what? I feel good. I don't have the necessity of check my phone. When my friends want to go out to chat, they just give me a call and that is it. Seriously, people. Is almost genuine freedom. And the funny part is I don't lost anything important and have a lot of time to enjoy the world, chatting with others and never, ever had the feeling of I'm loosing something relevant. It is true that boomers have a lot of simular traits and think some weird things but that dosen't mean they're always wrong. Using the "ok boomer" arguement is stupid and gets nowhere. This arguement is a logical fallacy known as ad homenim. It an a attack against the person to make them seem uncredible. Now in some cases this isn't a logical fallacy, but in one like this it is. Haleigh Webb I think people have a lower tolerance for what they believe isn't right. I think it's because of how culturally aware we have become. We now have the ability to talk to almost anyone around so we are not in a bubble like how people used to be. We now see and feel the pain of others more readily. Social justice is now seen in so many videos, pictures and movies. Characters are shown doing the right thing and other characters represent ignorance. So we have just been taught to immediately notice ignorance and want to do something about it. Or we have been taught a certain thing and find it insane that someone hasn't been as exposed to the same teachings that roam the internet. That's why I think people have become like this. And also the instant gratification part of it. So we are no longer happy with just agreeing to disagree. We want action.

My view on it is that we are less patient because we get everything right away and this is conditioning the brain to be impatient and intolerant and not patient enough to sit in silence and consider the opponent ‘s view ,because, it means rethinking your point of view or belief system or even a value. Also digital culture is reinforcing egotistic attitudes which is mostly about being valuable and worthy by being right. Your rightfulness equals your place value and you need to feel “better than” by being right. This is also the result of the information digital age. Information does not equal wisdom and it definitely does not equal maturity.

I wholeheartedly agree with this message! We have become "slaves" to our phones and not for any benefit. How many of us send a friend a text asking if we can call them before we dial their number? This seems ridiculous to me. Do we need permission before we communicate verbally with each other now? Have you ever seen a child become tense when they hear their parent's cell phone beep or buzz? Start acting out and looking for attention? I agree completely... cell phones don't belong in schools and they don't belong at the dinner table. We WILL survive the hour :)

Thank you for sharing! I've come to the slow realization, partly through personal (relationship) experiences and the other part observational, that today's social media/media age users, with its HYPER CONNECTIVITY (an issue!) can no longer differentiate between superficial show and tell and genuine expression. For so many people, but not all, express themselves - in some part- to show to others in order to receive some sort of affirmation from their intended audience. As this is comparable to social media posts today, where one posts something about themselves in order to receive affirmational "like," "love," and other types of emoji/comment based reassurances, so to know that what they are showcasing to the public is real. P.S. I am well aware that the above mentioned comment is controversially charged and unpopular of a statement; as this statements aim is to cause one to think about the legitimacy of this viewpoint I've made, not so I can be praised for it.

And have a child such as myself who want to communicate, interact, and base self worth on human interaction and long term achievement while others around want to sit on phones and are unwilling to be emotional open or have more than surface level relationships or to meet up and enjoy interaction with people spontaneously and focusing on each other. I am a believer in taking pictures with your phone or camera when you go on holidays, but I believe even more strongly that the act of taking pictures should not overshadow the enjoyment of that holiday itself. If I were to stroll through a museum or a beautiful park, I can take one or two pictures for memories and THEN I want just enjoy the moments of actually LOOKING and STROLLING through the park or the museum... enjoying that place as it is.. and not whipping out the phone or the camera every two freaking seconds to take a picture and then pouting because I do not look good in some pictures. Caring too obsessively about taking pictures just spoils the whole experience of being THERE.

Bravo Mr. Sinek !!!!! I teach middle school science in a city in the Northeast of America. I am the ONLY teacher (that I know of) who is against this over reliance, over indulgence & over use of "technology". I feel a little like your description of Dr. Oliver Wendell Holmes. I'm the old school crackpot who is out of touch with "modern thinking". It seems the all the modern thinking is to dive headlong into all this flashing, beeping, noisy electronic stimulation. My supervisor insists that books at "old fashioned" & that no one wants them except the parents. The trend is to do labs (I teach science) virtually because its "so much better". I am very suspicious of all of this because of the neuroscience. The neuroscience which you cite & the adage nimble fingers make for nimble brains is born out in our school lab when the students are working together. It is known as cooperative learning. There is also the dilemma of relying on the technology when the power is out, it looses its charge & just won't work ( the ghost in the machine). The of course there is the bling bling new modern what ever it is device that the sales rep eagerly demonstrates & gives you the wiz bang users tour of, hands you their card with the perfunctory "call me with any questions". Then the device sits & collects dust or is barely used because we cannot figure out how to use the thing. How did she get it to do this again? You call & of course "oh, they don't work here anymore", if you can get through the automated, outsourced answering system. You may also get the useless advice "oh, you just have to play with it." No one has time to play with anything. Its supposed to work as advertised & it DOES NOT. Add to that the massive amount of blatantly WRONG information there is oh these devices or on virtual labs & you have an equation equaling an educational disaster. 24 years ago the push was on to let students use calculators in first grade instead of having them do the math in their head because that's the modern way top do things. My vice principal told me how "studies show" this was the right approach. I think this was about the same time that rote memorization of times tables was removed from classroom practice. So, we now have sixth grades who CANNOT multiply, divide, add & subtract. The cannot calculate percents, works with decimals & have NO idea of fractions. Many of them cannot do the operation even with the calculators. College students taking statistics are unsure of which number to divide into which to derive a percentage. Students don't know how long it takes the Earth to make a full orbit of the Sun (the 1/4th of a day can even be overlooked). What are we doing to our young people with all of this technology??!!?!? We as a nation are spending a staggering amount of $$$ on education & getting a very poor return on our investment. A little greater than 1/3 of our nation's 4th graders are on level in terms of reading & writing. It's much lower for math. That's what all this modern thinking & overuse of technology has wrought. As a result of the content of this talk, I now know I am not a crackpot. i will continue to use the "hands on/heads on approach as I teach. Thank you Mr. Sinek

I have always preached this to family and friends. However, psychologically people only pay attention to a serious message when Justin Bieber says it or Elon Musk or then Steve Jobs the founder of this disaster from the first place. What is a common factor between these three "famous". A simple person can't affect you in 2024. You have got to be famous.

Dear Mr. Sinek, Why do you say there should be no internet in the classroom? I take this same position & feel like the lone wolf howling in the wilderness. Everyone around me insists that "technology" is the future & students should be using them. Is there data to reinforce this view point. By the way, Faraday cages that block cell signals are illegal. That's why cell phones in prisons are such a problem. I teach in an urban middle school & would love to hear your reply when you have a moment.

I understand why taking phones out of schools could make a difference. But not everyone wants to talk to each other. Not everyone is going to get along and just have a friendly conversation. As a high schooler, everyone is actually awful. All they care about are things that don't matter and complain about their blessings they don't even realize they have. I'm not saying that I'm way better than them, but it's difficult to listen to the conversations these kids have. I honestly don't even need my phone. I'd rather sit in silence or read a book than make relationships with fake people who are so lost in things that don't matter its impossible to try to bring them back to reality with logic. You can't fix stupid so I'd rather not interact with it.

But not everyone is that way. Unless you go to a school with less than 300 people and you know every single person, you can't say that everyone is awful. You could be missing out on getting to know great people just because you generalize them as being fake. Maybe the majority people suck, but there's bound to be a good few. But anyways, sitting in silence or reading books are good options than using the phone all the time. At least with reading and daydreaming, you stimulate your brain. I use to daydream a lot in school.

I always said we don't need computers in school!!! It all became a marketing tool...that's it. And they brainwashed parents into believing that having them is the sign of a good school.

Yeah man. It's getting worse and worse. And companies don't even care if you're on the phone during your work day because it's just a normal thing now. So sad to see.

I got put into a mental hospital after being a terrible kid and there were no phones allowed and the fact is life without cellphones and with real people is amazing not always amazing but in general it's amazing and I wish I had an environment where i could actually talk to someone for real ehh. People think that robots are technology going too far but turns out in the wrong hands cellphones are too much already.

I agree, fclp67, that life can be amazing if you're surrounded by people who DON'T use cell phones addictively. I'm considering trying to start a group for people who like that kind of environment (a cell-phone free social group)

You forgot to mention the space-time track. There must be psychological consequences to having relationships with people who for practical purposes have no physical location. Perhaps we could correct it with satellites.
