Simonitsch volunteered to join the Army Air Corps and was assigned to navigation training. After completing his navigation training, Simonitsch reported to Washington to be assigned to a crew. He was assigned to be the navigator for crew #17, 568th squadron, 390th Bomb Group. After completing their phase training, the crew boarded the Queen Elizabeth and sailed to England to begin their deployment. Simonitsch's first mission was on 12/11/43. On his 18th mission (3/8/44) to Berlin, his plane was shot down and the crew was forced to bail out. Simonitsch was a POW at Stalag 1 in Barth, Germany. He was eventually liberated by Russian forces at the end of the war.
