@@CobraKyle thanks, been riding a gravel for two years, am still learning everything about cyclism, i have an old old mtb - it had a 700 mm bar, but i was like 14 when we got it, and a city bike - i've fitted a same sized bar as some guy told me, see how you feel holding a stick with straight arms, horizontal in front of your face. And, 6'2", XL bikes, but i thought that was ok. But am reconsidering now as p, on those bikes, I see that leaning on a bar is just not the same thing as holding it (and its weight) in the air. I assume you must be bit tall too. Anyways I'll think it over and really, 780 might be just good. Mine are an older version that they don't make anymore, but these are pretty much the same. As for the geared conversion, it depends on the type of hub your rear wheel has. There's a lot of different scenarios if it will work or not, so it's hard for me to give a definitive yes or no. Google how to do a single speed to geared conversion, and there's a lot of great resources to help you!

I spray a little WD-40 underneath them and that usually gets them to slide right off!
@geemail369

Don't do that - WD40 does *not* dissolve after application and will render the grips useless, since they will come loose on the next install _WAY_ easier due to the residues! Use IPA (iso-propyl-alcohol) instead - just jam a cable tie in between bar and grip and squirt into the gap, as you keep working the zip tie in + turning the grip. The IPA will evaporate fully. Works for sliding on those grips as well!

Glad I found your channel. Just getting back into bikes from when I was a bmx kid. My dad was a road bike racer growing up. When I decided to get a bike I decided I didnt want to spend a bunch of money on a bike bc I might loose interest after a bit. Growing up I always road bike shop bikes not department store bikes bc dad refused to buy them from anywhere but a real bike store as he said. I dont have to tell you some of those prices. I live in hot springs ar its a big bike city So I just turned into a pawn shop one day to see what they had. I walked in and there sat a mongoose malus fat tire. Yeah I know mongoose is known for being wal mart these days but when I was a kid they were a bike shop bike only except for the blue max sold at western auto. But it was still a mongoose classic under a different name so it was still a real goose. And I'm pretty sure you can still get the real mongoose not a Kent wal mart with mongoose stickers. Anyway I feel in love with it just on a its a beast points. And used it was a good deal so if I lost interest no big money loss just 200 bucks. The other fat tire I seen on Craigslist was a gravity and it was 350 so I grabbed the goose. there are up grades i want to do like bars gear shifter breaks but thats all to make it more ride friendly. I didnt know till this video that diamond back made a fat tire. That was the brand bmx I rode back in the day and as much as I love that dang mongoose I want to find a fat tire db now. The goose won't be wasted I got a buddy who is getting back into bikes he loves that fat tire and he is on a limited budget. Im good on money so now that I know I love riding I dont mind spending some cash on one so I will give my buddy the goose when I find me a db fat tire. It will be a win win for me. I get to help out a less fortunate buddy and have a buddy with a fat tire to thrash trails with.

You are dropping chains because you are not shifting gears correctly. I bet you go through all the gears like you do a car 1 through 8 instead of how you are supposed to. On a 2x or 3x you are supposed to switch gears in the front around halfway through your gears to prevent "cross chaining" and you won't have those loud shifting problems and dropped chains. On a 2x8 setup you are supposed to shift: Left shifter Right Shifter 1 1-4 2 4-8 Never be in the biggest or smallest gears at the same time. Think of a bikes gears more like a big rig semis gears instead of a sports cars. You never want to be in 1 on the left and 8 on the right or 2 on the left and 1 on the right. That puts your chain in a bind and will damage your drivetrain and chain, even breaking the chain. It surprises me how many people don't know this, and take for granted that bike shifting is supposed to be like a cars, where you go straight through the gears, when it's more akin to big rig shifting and the purpose of these 3 on the front is to keep the chain as straight as possible and to keep the chain out of a bind to prevent chain drops, damage and chain breaks. If you are shifting correctly, you won't have loud shifts, or multiple gears that have the same ratios. I see people going with the 1x systems, and you would think they would do a bit of research first to ensure they are shifting gears right. 1x systems do not fix the issue with cross chaining, so you will still have chain drops and damage done to your drivetrain if you ride too much in the outermost gears. Until the manufacturers fix a drive system that accounts for chain bind the 2x and 3x systems are still better than the 1x system.
@CobraKyle
4 жыл бұрын
I never had any issues due to cross chaining. I used to road bike, so I'm very aware of how bad that can be. I was dropping it alot on this particular ride because my old rear derailleur didn't have a clutch and I was going over some very rocky terrain on a rigid frame. I'm hoping the industry follows the trend that Box Prime 9 is going for. 9 speed with same range as the 12 speeds.

Hi Andrew. I actually didn't add any spacers for the chainring. Never had a problem with shifting!

what is your opinion of KHS 4 seasons 1000?

I don't know a ton about KHS, but I see the 4 seasons get recommended a lot. I just took a look at the specs on their website, and appears to be a really nice bike!

if i only use it in the city, do you think how many cassette do i need to use in my crank? And how many T?
@CobraKyle
4 жыл бұрын
Will you be using a 1X drivetrain? Depends on how hilly your city is. If you wanna be able to keep up in traffic I would go with a 36 - 40 tooth front chainring. If using a 10 - 11 speed cassette, just find the biggest range you can find that will fit the bike. I think a 10-46 cassette would cover just about everything.

No mention of the new dropper post? What is it and how much was it?
@CobraKyle

Sorry about that. I had installed the dropper a year before this video was made, so I didn't include it in this batch of upgrades. It's a PNW Components Rainier dropper, and it currently sells for $180. Can't say enough good things about it!

Get yourself a Bluto fork brother.
@CobraKyle

I've been considering that or a Mastadon fork. Just hard to spend $600 on a fork for a bike that only cost $600. I keep an eye out on the used market every now and then, but so far have enjoyed the full rigid feel of this bike.

Awesome video and upgrades! The bike looks awesome! I would have also gone with a shorter stem, either 40mm or 50mm. I've always done this upgrade to my fat bikes and it completely transforms the handling and flickability.
@CobraKyle

I eventually put a 50mm stem on after this video was filmed. It was way better. I think the original was either 90 or 100mm? Short stems for the win!

How did you fit a 96 BCD oval chainring on that FSA Comet Mega Exo crank? I have the same exact bike and not only does the inner ring BCD measure way under 96mm but it's also symmetrical/square. I must be missing something? Love the vid, planning to do the same XT 1x11 conversion on mine!

Hello! I just checked my order history and it was a 64 BCD from Absolute Black. I got the 28 tooth oval option. The 64 BCD fits on the smaller chainring holder, and I believe the larger one is a 104 BCD. Here's an Amazon link to the 28 tooth 64 BCD: amzn.to/2YZE0eT

Thanks David! This was actually the first bike I was able to climb up it with. 5" tires offer maximum traction. I've since been able to climb Caliche on my other bikes, but the fat bike showed me the way. I hate how flat Caliche looks on camera because it's a pretty serious hill!
