Couldve hidden one of the dowels by drilling into the surfaces to be glued together. Another fun tip is to try and match the direction of the grain of the wood with the dowel. If your dowels arent the same species or color, perhaps consider using very dark dowels to make it more of an accent. Lastly, you can use a chisel or handplane to peel back a thin layer of wood where the dowels will be drilled before gluing the pieces together. This allows you to insert the dowels and glue the wood back down to hide the holes. You can see an example in this short: kzitem.infoxrPM4oCYv7I?si=DpZ-pWdetjKiFN7a

After applying glue (Fevicol), let it moist each wood piece for 2-3 minutes. Then stick the pieces together. I see that you are immediately joining them. It will cause some glue to come out like a leakage.
