Great video! I think I'll take some tips for my own home machine... So my suggestions are really just based on what we do in a cafe and have just become habit even at home. If you're not using the single cup button, program it to run for 10 to 12 seconds (including preinfusion time) and while you're dumping the grinds in your knock box you can press the button to rinse the group head. I'll do this a second time when I'm done using the machine but this time I'll move the handle back and forwards to help rinse the seal. while moving the portaliter backwards and forwards. If you steam milk, fill up a cup with hot water from the machine and let the wand soak for 5 minutes when you're done using the machine to help dislodge any stubborn milk stains. While the wand is soaking, that's usually enough time to clean your jugs, grinder, table and used glasses. I also empty out and clean the drip tray once I'm done for the day because I don't want coffee oils or water to sit in there. At home I just rinse it with water and once a week, wash it with soapy water along with the water container.

I was very interested but also exhausted and fell asleep watching this last night. Thanks for this straightforward video. I have the same cleaning products that were gifted to me by a friend who was moving but I have the cafiza tablets not powder. Changed the water filter a year ago. It did not taste any different from the day I purchased it. Used an other than Breville filter. For your drip tray after cleaning. Put a shot of dish soap on each side where the water enters. It will help cleaning the next time. Thank you for taking the time to do these videos. They are great.

Hi there, great video thanks. I got some great pointers from you, thanks heaps. One thing I learnt from my mother when she worked in a cafe.. use a glass of water and dip the spout in like frothing the milk. Does a great clean after every cuppa after a wipe. Takes a few seconds and you'll see cloudy water.

that's a great idea for the in between cleaning of the tip (I usually do the cafiza soak bi-weekly). Do you exclusively do that and don't do a further deeper cleaning? that could be a good idea for me to replace the cafiza soak for the tip if yes

@@GadgetsGearCoffee Hey Jess, thanks for the great content! Just discovered your channel. Anyway, I just sold my DB after 2 years of ownership and I never once had the descale notification pop up. I did maintain my machine really well and my water is quite soft to begin with ( live in Vancouver). I would also advise staying away from doing it if you don't have to, read some forums, sometimes the machine isn't too happy after the process. Also, in regards to the gasket, I actually never had to change mine, I think a big part of that reason is I never leave my portafilter locked in while the machine is not in use, it just sits on the drip tray until I turn it on. No point squeezing it down for no reason!

BTW, I’ve had my BDB for about 5 months and it has not indicated descale yet either. A couple of weeks ago I had to send it in because of a steam leak. All indications are that to his happened because I had not yet descaled. Bottom line is that I will descale every 2 months now that I have it back in working order. Thought this could be useful to those out there who like me (and you) were waiting for the machine to tell me to descale. Don’t wait and end up without your machine for a couple of weeks like me!

I've had my machine for nearly over 1 year, maybe 2 now? I honestly can't keep track, never descaled, absolutely fine. I have been using the filter that's recommended with it that's supposed to soften the water - maybe your water is super hard because descaling regularly isn't good for the machine and prevention is key.

Hey! That's a harder one to answer. I don't know if breville has a recommendation in their manual, it would depend on your water hardness and all. I believe the filter has a 3 month dial ring on it off memory so change every 3 months ish. I sort of stretch mine out, the water in my area isn't that hard

just got my BDB and already concerned because I read about sediments settling in the Steam Boiler and the water getting absolutely disgusting over time as pure water is extracted when I steam milk, leaving the gunk behind. have you had trouble with this? I assume simply draining some water through the tap every now and then would fix this, since the spout feeds off the steam boiler?
@GadgetsGearCoffee

that's bound to happen to any which is why being mindful of your water hardness and taking appropriate measure is important.

Hey Jess, you've probably already seen this but have a look through this thread for a whole world of BDB modification options and maintenance advice. www.home-barista.com/espresso-machines/breville-dual-boiler-mods-and-maintenance-t61421.html One of the big ones there is not to use the descale function at all - quite a few cases of the steam boiler cooking itself during the process and burning out a thermal fuse mounted deep down in the bowels of the machine. Only a $5 part to replace, but involves pretty major surgery to get in to change it. Best option is to use quality soft water - either tap through a filter or via making up batches from de-mineralised/distilled water and measured addition of your own (non scale-forming carbonate) minerals. Cheers
@GadgetsGearCoffee

I have seen that thanks for sharing :) I've gone through that list several times since getting the machine but get overwhelmed and confused by the content. A forum might not be the best way to display that information clearly unfortunately. I did not know about the descale! I haven't had to use it so far and am planning on using my LARQ filter once I get that but I suspect at some point I will need to run a descale at some point because even soft water will have some sort of scale build up with time + heat + use (I assume?)
