One of the positives about dehydrating is that you know when it doesn't work. Mold quickly makes an appearance. Plus easy to see when rot sets in & food is mushy rather than brittle. Much less hidden danger than in most other food preservation methods. It may not work this year. Outside drying needs hot sunny days with fairly low humidity. Know it wouldn't work here in NC this year because it has been so wet. Would have been a huge success couple of years ago when conditions were the reverse.

I like the cheese cloth idea . plastic and screens have toxins People use stuff that shocks me.. Cheese cloth is made of cotton it is cheap to replace. you could cover it with parchment paper to make it stronger and last longer. Love your idea. I saw one of these greenhouses in a catalog. I live in an apt with huge windows. I could use the green house to grow and dry inside my apt. It comes with a cover which is perfect to keep everything enclose. YOU ROCK..

Troy - next one you build one use screws and glue - much stronger - the nails could come loose as the wood shrinks and expands due to the temperature changes. this was alway a rule in the southern states - use screws not nails. Never dried cukes before - could be interesting. I always dried apples, berries, pears etc in the dehydrator. I have strung some beans and hung them up to dry with good results also. You might try that with some of your beans - saves the tray space for other goodies.

I hope you get enough air circulation in it. If you put your dehydrator inside your electrified fence area, it will help keep critters away from it. I think you may have to put screen on your venting areas, though. Good job.

Suggestion Larger solar collector. Black on the back of the tower. Intake a little off the ground and fine mesh to keep bugs out. Lightweight flap the opens with the rising air but closes when the sun is down on the exit vent (mesh there too). If ants become a problem make a 3 inch moat of water out of PVC or gutter material to go around the outside. Ants wont cross it.

Wasnt born yesterday. I tried that. Sadly the wood split anyway when the screw head hit bottom. I tried a few of them and ruined some wood. I would need to counter sink each and every single screw in order for it to work. Decided that nails are easier for now.

Hey Troy - what a great idea! Just - again - one of those ideas that one can easily copy and make oneself. I am impressed of your intelligent and creative mind that comes up with such perfect concrete ideas. On the video it almost seems as if you perfectionze the whole concept while working on it. Hope it will work out great! If the cheesecloth doesn't hold well enough you could consider using fishline (nylon) to span under the cloth to give it more strength... Good luck drying!

Tony, have to watch temps because dehydrating doesn't cook the food. Solar dehydrator temp range should be between 100 F and 140-150 F depending on what's in it. Highest temp is for drying meat - jerky. Vegetables dry best at around 120F. Herbs best around 105-110F. Solar cooking gets a whole lot hotter than that. If cooked instead of simply being dried, will not keep as well. If dried too quickly can become "case hardened". Traps moisture inside that can't escape.

you could use your car with the windows closed as a solar oven. Just lay out the trays from the dash to the seat tops and from there to the back window . You can open the windows if it gets too hot. I like to want to set my dehydrator for 115 - 125 degrees.

Since you've water bath canned, shouldn't be fear of pressure canning. Just as properly doing water bath ensures a safe product, so does pressure canning. Where potential for trouble lies is when folks don't follow tested recipes/procedures. Ball Blue Book excellent guide for beginners. Shows step by step process. Due to safe canning practices & improvements in equip instances of botulism are extremely rare for home pressure canned food. More likely to come from other sources in the home today.

Good job on that dehydrator, maybe put some cans (with a way to elevate the feet) under the feet and fill with water to prevent those darned ants from getting to your food. Are you just draining those cukes or drying them. What can you do with dried cukes? To dry them much faster or drain them (like for pickles) sprinkle them with salt, otherwise they may rot before the dry, they have a LOT of water in them.

Troy have you had thought about the Deer Fence on the drying frames? This would be a good substrate for your base shelf supports. Use screen wire to cover shelves. Plastic mesh is available at hobby shops. May not be food grade. Do price per sq ft comparison to screen wire from Lowes, HD, or WalMart to plastic mesh. Wire may be more economical, too. Don't use hardware cloth if it is galvanized. Zinc coating not food safe.
@BethGrantDeRoos

How are you going to wash the cheesecloth? Are you blanching any of the vegetables before dehydrating? Tomato will stain the cheesecloth and present you with cross contamination issues if you then try and dehydrate something else on top of the stained cheesecloth. Food grade plastic mesh would be safer and washable and is not that expensive. Also want to add that blac trash bags have stuff in them to kill bugs so in the heat they off gas toxins into the drying food.

Hey do you think that if you made a the same thing buy used 1''x2'' boards to enclose it and used tin roofing on top and made a soda can solar heater it would have enough power to dry vegetables and fruits and detach the solar heater and use the box as a smoker for fish and meat? You would probably have to have a big solar heater since your not harnessing the green-house effect with the plastic. I have a big smoker but it requires to much power for a solar system.

Hey, saw next video w/ rain... where you just threw a flat board or glass over top. Quite understandable. But thought was, cut 2 flattened "A" shaped ends, then put staggered slats across to create a loovered 'roof' to keep surprise rains out, yet let air out of the top for good circulation. Lower edges all overlap next lower slat by 1" plus, perhaps 1/2-3/4" gap? Slats could be quite thin, could be wood, plex, that plastic cardboard stuff...? Definitely enjoy the videos!
