I like my truck, but for the two months I have owned it I have occasionally had a strong smell of exhaust in the cabin. This only happens when stationary at a light or intersection and goes away as soon as I'm moving. It also seems to be related to the exhaust being at full heat leading me to believe the failure is caused by expansion and goes away when things cool back down.
After some investigation I found the culprit - the 6.6L Duramax has an exhaust clamp that is prone to failure that is located at the base of the turbo downpipe. When this fails, the exhaust exits into the engine bay just below the intake for the Cabin Air Supply.. and if you're running AC, the exhaust gets sucked into the cabin. Great design.
Thankfully it's a simple fix that doesn't require any specialized tools or a lift - you can access the failed clamp through the passenger wheel well.
