Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't technically more of a geminate marker? It's not really a sound in and of itself as much as it makes the following consonant longer, kinda like how makes the preceeding vowel longer. I know the same thing occurs in Italian, with words like "spaghe*t*ti"

“っ“, officially 促音/そくおん is translated as “geminate consonant”, but the term is confusing to many learners. The length of the consonant after っ is actually the same in Japanese, not doubled. In Romaji it’s written as double but the consonant is not affected. The vowel before っ is shortened, (for a long vowel, it’s a bit shorter than the full length), and the airflow is cut like when we hold a breath briefly.

I’ll give you a good example. We don’t always need a consonant after っ. When we say “あっ!”, the length ofあ is shorter than just saying あ on its own. Plus the glottal stop 😊 The same goes for “えっ“ etc. These are actually common in everyday speech 👍

It always threw me off when I’d see a つ before or at the end of a word 😅 that little symbol is a tricky one I like the Bocchi-chan example :)
