Li-ion batteries should be charged at about 4.2v per cell. You can use a diode to drop the voltage, but if you use one diode then it will drop 0.5v and you will get about 4.5v which is high for charging Li-ion batteries. On the other hand if you will use two diode in series then it will drop 1v and you will get about 4v which low for charging.
Instead we can reduce the output voltage of a charger to 4.2v by changing the number of turns in the transformer without reducing it`s power and efficiency.
