Hi. Thank you for this. I been having difficulty with categorical variables and how to include them with my linear regression model. You explained it clearly, at the level that a beginner SPSS user could understand. And doing so step by step, not assuming that the listener would be able to figure it out on their own, is awesome. Thank you very much. ^_^

Great video. What about a categorical variable that ordinal. From a little to a lot? Would you dummy code the same way and then would the 0 or 1 dummy variable be considered nominal or ordinal?

The beginning was very helpful, but overall it would have been more helpful if you interpreted the results. What does it mean that black and other have higher confidence scores than white?

this model would predict that, on average, the black and other ethnic groups have more 'confidence' in the police than the white ethnic group have.

That makes no sense. This is a case where the model is contradicting what we know/believe to be the case. Many surveys show that black communities/Asian communities distrust the police. I think there is a flaw here.

What happens when you have multiple categorical variables for linear regression? For example, if I have multiple levels of ethnicity and BMI, is it done the same way? Do I still exclude the reference category? Thanks

@10:58 what does "statistically significant relationship" actuall means?? that something is affecting something else in a way? or what

Hello and thank you for this video. I am running a regression model that has multiple IVs, one of which is a categorical predictor with multiple levels. I cannot find any information on including additional IVs into a model with a multi-level categorical predictor. Can this be done? I am guessing so, but I am yet to find a case where someone does this. My concern is that adding in other predictors will somehow affect my "constant" value, which as you stated, is the mean for my reference category. I appreciate your help and any references are welcomed, as I am hoping to publish this analysis.

my multiple regression model has both categorical and continuous predictor variables, how can I interpret when both are included in analysis at the same time. Your suggestion would be really helpful. Thanks

I know this is an old answer. But maybe this helps someone. But she just did that. Just add the new variable into the regression. Each "level" has to become its own column. So each race gets their own column.

how do you interpret the standardized variables? There is no standardized constant - is it zero? Why is it not reported?

Hi. Thank you for this video. I have two questions: 1. What does it mean when one of the dummy variable is auto excluded by SPSS? 2. I have two dummy variables and one was dropped by SPSS. Would it be right to run the linear regression separately for each dummy variable?

Hi, I am running a regression model with a categorical independent variable with 3 levels (ie. firstborns, middleborns and lastborns) and a continuous dependent variable. May I know whether I can use this method too? Also, what if one of the levels is not significant? How should I interpret the results then? Thank you!

Why would you so intuitively use white and black as distinctions for people. Such ignorance that you distinguish on such terms. Grose!
