Thanks for the video. I've had enough of them stealing the bird food I put out and recently they've started attacking smaller birds and I even scared one away who had pinned down a starling and was mercilessly ripping it apart for entertainment. The poor starling was screaming it's lungs out. I know the Magpies are trying to feed their young but I can't turn a blind eye to the vicious, sport killing they've started in my garden, especially when my young kids are home from school too.

Nice! I might have the try a smaller version of this. I live in the city, and don't have very good spots for shooting them with a .17 cal air rifle. Even my neighbors are tired of them. They are relentlessly noisy in our neighborhood, day in day out. I've heard people hating on crows, seaguls and other creatures for their noisyness. I am fine with those, but I've never heard them in excess. Our city is known as the capital of magpies - they are too common here, and espeically concentrated in areas like mine within the city. The law doesn't consider them protected - so its open season on them. I am not exaggerating when I say, you really can't walk around my area during the day, without hearing them going off, nyaking up a storm somewhere close or within ear shot. There are less song birds around here too. We really do have a magpie problem here - they even get into some of the neighbors garbage. We don't have coyotes or anything like that. I have to sleep with ear plugs in to reduce the chances of getting woke up too early by them, or going to sleep at night. YES, they REALLY ARE THAT noisy in my area, and they do NOT make a pleasant sound either. I think this style of trap is a good option for us here.
@Clayonthetrail

@Hartley Hare I find it odd how youtube will show me some responses in comments, and not others. Yours didn't show up, but the latest one did. I'm aware that the average person doesn't have issues with these things like I do. Mine comes from late childhood. Sort of have a PTSD with these things. That aside, they are pests around here, and I don't use that term lightly. They bully the other birds. The song birds get chased away. It's easy for someone to judge another's response without truly understanding what they experienced. Thank fully, I'm not the only one who has some degree of issues with them. I work in a big shop, and some of the guys there also get annoyed with them where they live. Like I said, our city has the most of these pesky things than any other city in our country. I am getting better sleep now though that I've had to go to the extend of at least temporarily installing a sound proofing wall to my window in my room, and run a fan all night to down out any potential peeps. It's a little extreme, but at least I don't have to wear earplugs anymore. I don't like killing anything, not even the odd spider in the house. Think I've mentioned this before, but I have neighbors who also don't like them. One told me they were fine with me popping some of them off. I'm totally open to other suggestions to chasing them away. There were no magpies in my area some 14 years ago when I first moved in. It was nice and peaceful! They've come in and spread like gangs in the last 3.5 years.
@TFYS-QA

@@Rikachan92 Curious why you were looking up magpie traps then. For the record, we haven't had magpies in our neighborhood to the extent as they are now. They moved in on us! And there are other birds here, mainly sparrows, and very few song birds that are just fine. Could do with some more actually. Sometimes a crow, or even rarely a hawk. I know of a number of people in my city who also feel to some degree, the same way about magpies in particular. It's easy to say what you said, without having experiencing them excessively. I've actually thought about posting daily recordings of these things going off. I might actually do that, but i don't really have the time, but those magpies would make it easy. Hah, might even make a silly rock song out of them as I have PLENTY of magpie sounds from just around the house to sample from. Ok wow, I just opened my back door, and listened for 60 seconds. Impressively, I only heard sparrows and a couple song birds - not a single magpie peep. That is NOT common here... how refreshing!! But those poor birds sure get bullied around here by those nyak heads.

I didn't actually build one of these yet, because I got a larsen trap. I caught one last year, but that did nothing to their population. They are worse this year. Looks like this could potentially get them all in my area in one day! I'm going to have to design mine a bit different, more for a method of extraction, as I',m in the city, and can't just walk outside in the back yard with a pellet gun or what have you. I have to make it more discrete. Last summer, I had to pick up the larsen trap and take it into the garage.

@@hartleyhare99 I had considered poison, but kind of scared other animals like the odd cat or rabbit, might consume it as well. At least my neighbors now understand why I often wear headphones when im outside. I don't even care if they have some odd judgement on me about it. They seem to mostly agree with me about those pesky f***ers anyways. My family used to poke fun at me, because they'll never truly understand. Oh Jose, be careful what you wish for! You might be fine with them I suppose. I never got the chance to really find them that interesting. from a young age, when I had no knowing of how to cope, I was somewhat subjected to them on a daily basis, nyak nyak nyak nyak really loudly, every morning (well 6 days a week), for months one year. I never got over how angry I got with them and their relentless noise. Think about a song you don't really like, and imagine someone playing it loudly, over and over on a daily basis, morning, random times throughout the day, and in the evenings too. No matter what, you can't stop it as if it slowly became a form of torture. Apparently there is a term for a sound that triggers someone - misophonia. I have that with magpies. Unfortunately, in my neighborhood, I'm surrounded by them. Group of at least a dozen of them, and they hang around in gangs, rarely ever alone. Do you have any nice song birds around? You can say goodbye to them if you bring in the magpies. You'll replace the beautiful singing with "NYAK NYAK NYAK NYAK NYAK!"

@Hartley Hare Wow yah, you wouldn't happen to be one of my neighbors, hey? That would be too funny XD. Millwoods? Just throwing it out there.. Yeah I have to do the same thing. My windows are old and don't seal well - VERY expensive to replace. They aren't nearly good enough to block out the sounds, so I always have my music turned up to down them out. I too am not as young as I used to be, so not as inclined to be climbing a tree. Actually my sister had their tree chopped down recently, and it had a magpie nest in it. No nests in my tree, but it is too tall, and I need to get it chopped. Kind of wish there was a nest, I wouldn't delay getting it taken down sooner in my case. If I do design and build a trap for city usage, I'll post it on my channel. Something like what Clayonthetrail built, but thin enough, with a bottom and possibly wheels, to take it into the garage once they are caught inside. I;d have a small hatch I can close on the opening up top. I was thinking of building it so I can drop the roof on them, to hold them in place, and/or design a mode of egress, to control extracting them. I might have to sacrifice one or two of them to make sure they know I mean BUSINESS. But then transport them somewhere else. Someone else in our city actually spent I;m guessing tax dollars, on a park homage to magpies. Maybe I'll boot them out there.

@Hartley Hare I got ya, yeah there's gotta be another way for you. Luckily I rarely hear them anymore in the mornings when I am still in bed, as I run a fan in my bedroom for drone noise, and had to build up an extra wall with doubled up drywall, and ruxol sound insulation to block off the entire wall portion with the window. Quite effective. Don't have to wear ear plugs anymore as I did for the last few years during sleeps. Even in winter they stick around and nyak it up. I wouldn't hate them so much if it wasn't for the unsettling, disturbing sounds they make. I will admit, it is nice to know that others have the same issue with those noisy things. Cheers :)
