This is why it's so important to know what your doing when installing a shower, something so simple can lead to thousands of dollars in repairs, I make sure to use the high quality black Teflon tape and hand tighten the shower arm, even if it stops not pointing down I've always been able to turn it enough to get it in proper position and make sure it's on the tighter side not loose at all, plus I pressure test the shower spouts with a five gallon bucket underneath before I seal up the wall just in case a solder joint is leaking.

A good trick to use when installing the shower arm on top of using thread sealant tape(wrapped 3x WITH the threads) and pipe dope is spinning the goose neck on as tight as you can get it by hand, then using the handle of your channel locks or a peice of 1/2" copper inside the goose neck to spin it a couple more times into the drop ear 90.

@@TileCoach Wait so people dont pressure test their faucet before closing the wall??? That''s risky as hell lol.... I always use a compression valve on the tub spout and a test cap on the shower drop elbow and pressure up the entire system before anything is closed. When the water is running normally the pressure won't be anywhere close to max so I know im solid.

4:53 the solution to this "problem with shower arms" is to wrap it heavily with Teflon tape and put pipe dope on as well. Be sure to taper the tape so you don't push it off the threads. This will guarantee that the threads will be water tight long before you get to a point where it's to tight to turn to the appropriate position. The pipe dope acts like lubricant. Just get it snug and you're all set.

Absolutely the best method. An alternative is to skip the tape and just use pipe dope, if you are certain that you will never, ever want to unscrew that shower arm ever again. With the tape, you get the same seal as with dope alone, but it is still possible to unscrew the arm without a crowbar.

There's one thing that it would be good to do whenever you find you're having to remove water damaged materials, always use a HEPA air scrubber next to the area where the work is being performed. As being certified in mold remediation and water damage restoration I frequently see tradesmen or handyman unknowingly exposing themselves and the entire living space to mold spores. Mold effects everyone differently. I've seen people not effected at all from the occasional contact, and I've also had a friend who was never sick get cancer and die from living in a home with 'black mold' that came from an air conditioning system. The point is, a HEPA air scrubber can help minimize the risk of exposure to mold and even on a job where no visible mold is seen it can still help keep the dust down from spreading through the home.

I recently pulled out an extremely old shower and bath from a 1970s house. It had that ugly splotchy tile used at the time and the tile was over about 2 inches of mortar over a wire mesh. It was a complete nightmare to remove, but there was zero leakage after all these years. It make me thing that all these new products people are using and having leaks and problems with are NOT better than the old ways it was done. I'm thinking about rebuilding using the same type of method instead of using all the overpriced crap they sell now. Hope you fully recover from the flu soon.

Man that shower head connection setup is terrible. Are they all like that in America? In Australia we do them the complete opposite way, we have a male thread that sticks out through the finished tile. We waterproof around the male thread after the wall linings are installed. We then cut the threaded pipe back to the desired length after tiling (usually leaving about 25mm / 1 inch left showing) then we screw the shower head/arm (which is a female fitting) onto that. No chance for leaks into the wall cavity this way. You can see exactly what you are doing, even if the connection was to leak this way, it's on the outside of the tile which is not a problem.

Water damage is absolutely BRUTAL, and in this case it’s not spending less on waterproofing and such, was a leak in the shower drop, which is a bummer; but, most times ppl won’t wanna spend the money or take the time to waterproof a bathroom, which is important as the cost of fixing/replacing can be more than the actual install in first place. For the windows, probably know, but I like using Vvivid, 3M, Avery, etc…Architectural Window “Vinyl” to add privacy, and it’s a relatively easy install; and the cost is real affordable, compared to getting new glass or windows installed. Our family learned the hard way how dangerous mold from water damage is. Our 8 year old daughter started complaining of dizziness, sore throat, constant headaches, and she was having episodes where she got really loopy, all from an old roof leak that we primed and painted over instead of remediating. You should not be tearing into all that moldy stuff without a negative air unit and at least 4 mil plastic to isolate it. Every time you bang it with your hammer, millions of spoors go flying everywhere. It wouldn't surprise me if the owners are suffering effects of mold exposure without knowing what is causing it. Most doctors don't know anything about mold exposure so they can't diagnose it. BTW, letting the mold dry before demolition is actually worse than doing it while wet.

I have seen similar to this. Over time there is a build up of calcium in the spray head which increases the back pressure the drop ear sees. Te time I remember this was a shower which had been in place 5+ years before it started to leak due to that increased back pressure.

Interesting to see your fittings are female in the wall over there. We have generally have male threaded fittings that come out of the wall and are water proofed to the backer so any leaks from screwing on fixtures are inside the shower and water proofing. Obviously plumbing it self can still have failures within the wall too but would be less likely that a positioned fixture that gets constantly adjusted and likely changed during the life of the shower.

This should be addreessed by the code making authority. If I'm not mistaken, drop ear elbows for a shower arm have a rubber washer (like a garden hose does) resting in the bottom of the elbow because tightening it probably won't orient it correctly, When I have had an occasion to install one (rarely - i'm just a DIY'er) I purposely created a hole in the finish material that is LARGER than necessary (but small enough to be covered by the trim ring) so that I can slip the ring down the shower arm and peer into the wall cavity and look at the elbow to see if it's dripping. Shower arms get manipulated every time you reach up to adjust the aim of the shower head. I like being able to see that drop-ear elbow. These days, there are so many add-ons available that it's always under stress somehow. It's a bad way of doing things and needs to be re-designed.
