Let him work for that sound. You're doing it for him. Hitting bag or mitts doesn't mean it's OK to drop your hands. Judging your own distance is an element to be mastered. Don't shorten his punches. Lead foot under his chin will cause him to lean when moving in with the cross. Get that lead leg out more. Last but not least ,when he throws the left hook whack the shit out of his right side of his face so he never drops his hand again. Test all your fighters . They have a bad habit of dropping their right hand when they throw the left hook. Defensive mitt work works fighter's instincts.

You are supposed to meet the glove a 'little bit' and slap the glove to protect the pad holders wrist... but the fighter should be farther back and have proper distance to practice good reach
@lbcompany9581

To be honest,I don't like how the pad holder meets halfway only because it's not letting the fighter use his full extension.a real fighter is probably not going to meet you halfway.good videos tho

Meeting is the easiest way to prevent the holder getting shoulder damage, and provides solid contact to get the trainees wrist and knuckles used to the impact of a solid target.

The issue here is the pad holder. He seems to be too close. The person throwing the punches should be able to extend more before contact. But having said that, mitt training is excellent for the reasons mentioned in this video. Go to the 24:18 part of this next video with Freddie Roach and you will see him talking about EXACTLY what I mentioned. kzitem.info/news/bejne/1ouKvZd9qJ5kdo4

At 2:13 he clearly says jab=1 cross=2 and hook=3. So wouldn't 2-3-2-3 be cross, left hook, cross, left hook? At 2:33 he calls out 2-3-2-3 and it's listed as jab-cross-jab-cross, which is incorrect (even know the boxer throws the right punches)

Meeting Half way is not a good practice for your partners punches, you’ll want to wait till the last sec where he’s near full extension and then slide off the pad backwards to restrain the full force! More extensions and most importantly less injury in the wrist and shoulder

I like the vid. I feel you may have overemphasized the contact that the pad holder exerts on to the glove in your single punch demo (between 0:59 and 1:51) as the level of contact dropped off significantly when you sped it up in the combos. If you put too much downwards pressure on an uppercut it can be a shortcut to wrist injury for the inexperienced fighter. Other than that, really enjoyed the video.

Having a partner is best but plenty you can improve solo; drill your footwork, shadow boxing, work in combos, speed, flow, hit heavy bag, slip line for head movement, strength and conditoning... the list goes on. Perhaps if you put in the work and start to improve vastly faster than your bro (which you will) he might eventually be inspired to take note when you constantly hand him his ass in sparring

almost everyone I see on youtube gives the boxer too much feedback. when I say feedback I mean the meeting of the glove with that pad. you see Freddie Roach and Roger Mayweather give a lot of feedback but you have to remember they are putting on a show for the media. I bet behind closed doors the fighters have to chase that pad a little more. you want to give some feedback but the point is not to reach out and tap the boxers glove to give a good sound or to make him have resistance to punch against the point is to reach out to where the fighter is "supposed" to make contact and then vanish (adjust for difficulty) if the boxer is ready and his punch is on balance and on time he will feel feedback and the punch will make a sharp "CRACK" and if the punch is not on time it will either miss or just give a dull thud. it's easy to give feedback and make it sound like the punches are hard but if you are trying to get better that isn't the point. I've never heard anyone on youtube articulate mitt work theory successfully. maybe someday.

meet him halfwayay? Respecfully, I disagree. Halfway is too much. You need to let the boxer go as far in distance with his punch as it would be possible. Halfway is good for speed in an already skillful boxer.

No offense to "the squid " but this video was a bit all over the place and I would disagree with the "meet him halfway" method. Notice how the fighters arm is not fully extended , now takeaway the pad and hes still got about another 10-12 inches to cover. If you're interested check out JT Van V on here. His instructional videos are top notch. I also purchased this training manual from him www.precisionstriking.com/shop/padwork-and-combinations/ focusing strictly on mittwork and combos. As far as mitts themselves you can't go wrong with this pair here www.walmart.com/ip/15393007?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=0&adid=22222222227000621399&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=40331998712&wl4=pla-78294165752&wl5=9031211&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=8175035&wl11=online&wl12=15393007&wl13=&veh=sem great price and quality. The reason behind meeting the punch half way was pathetic! Plus how do you work on accuracy an range when the pad holder is doing both! A good pad holder moves it an inch or two to meet the punch! Then your letting them find there range and your shoulder arnt “getting all jacked up”

I don't call combos by numbers, only by names, jab, cross, hook, hook. Also, top guys seem to meet the boxer's hands with the pads, but I was told that is incorrect. -What gives?
@cbart2k198
5 жыл бұрын
At first my trainer held the pads about 8 inches away from himself but held them still. Once I got a little better he moved them around for (hooks, jabs and uppercuts) but I’ve never seen the meet halfway thing because it makes the boxer stand too close and it’s not realistic. Also at first he stood still or at least 4 feet away to make me come to him and make me get 3 quick shots then duck/dodge. Also 123 is a secret that not many people know but it means take 1,2,3 quick hits then back up/dodge. It gives you enough time to get some damage in but also gives you time to take a breathe because you can’t swing when you don’t have any air in you. One more thing that was off about this video is his name. Who tf calls themselves a “squid”😂🧿

I’m my opinion I think you should only do the halfway for people who aren’t going to fight seriously and who are just training like I’ve been doing mma for 4 years and I’m teaching my girlfriend for the fun of it and it helpful because she’s a starter and we are just doing it for fun
@danielhiggins8798

I use pads as a footwork routine as much as a hand routine. I position myself the way an opponent would, then present a target that would present in that situation. I keep the combos simple. Usually 5 punch maximum. The Mayweathers have a system they’ve been practicing since Floyd was 7 years old. It’s mainly for show. Freddie Roach has a good routine. I’ve learned a few variations for kickboxers and MMA fighters, since the stance is different. Honestly, it’s not something I enjoy. It’s like eating broccoli. Good for you but tastes bad.

I've never trained with a boxing coach that holds the pads this way for normal pad work, they are to provide you a target only - it's up to the fighter to judge the distance they need to be at, the technique, speed and the power required to make a solid connection with the pad. Sure as a beginner it's harder to connect with the pads, you overextend on your punches and you don't look or sound as "cool" when you train, but you're being taught to earn these things on your own and you're not being given them on a plate. Distance is one of the most important aspects of boxing, if you have to judge distance correctly when using pads you'll be much more likely to do well in sparring when compared to someone who's having the pads thrown at them.
