If I am not mistaken the film director who won the Golden Lion at this year's Venice film festival based her film on one of Ernaux's books.I think the book is called" L'evenement".

Thanks for another great video. I haven't read any Ernaux, but 'Things Seen' is on the list of future reads for a book group I'm part of, so looking forward to that now :)

If you're interested in another Erneaux, I was blown away by I Remain in Darkness, where she writes about helping her mother with Alzhemers, the myriad of associated emotions. Her writing is just so spare but powerful.

I just watched Greg from supposedly fun talk about the Author and started looking around in this video popped up, your video. I’m very happy that memoirist won the prize. I’ve heard her name but never read anything by her. I write Memoir so I should take a look at the first Memoir Writer to win the Nobel prize. Maybe I should start with this book. Thank you for this video. Aloha

I have this on my shelf but in an edition from Quartet published in 1993 and called Passion Perfect! Fitzcarraldo seem to be resurrecting her work at the moment. I really enjoyed ‘A man’s place’ which they republished recently but my copy from 1991 was called ‘Positions’! Hard to keep up!

@@EricKarlAnderson Both ‘Positions’ and ‘A Man’s Place’ seemed to be inappropriate titles for the book which was originally titled ‘La Place’. It’s a wonderful study of the author’s father, and also about her growing up and finding her place in the world. You can see clearly where ‘The Years’ came from.

Congratulations! Annie Ernaux is a wonderful writer. Her works definitely taught me how to and when to pause, take another look, and instead of just thinking differently feeling differently as well.🍻

An interesting account of the book. I picked up two Abdulrazak Gurnah's while listening. And now Ernaux is on the longterm TBR.

Have you read Abdurazak Gurnah? He was a surprise choice, but he was Booker nominated in 1994. Most of his books are not readily available in the states (for now)... I'm really hoping Atwood wins one of these years in spite of a chilly reception she gave a friend when he yelled out her name as she was getting into a taxi in DC.

Yes, as I say in the video I loved reading his novel By The Sea. I've been meaning to read more. It's so good that he'll be published more widely now.

I have this is on my shelf along with one or two other Ernaux’s I am yet to read 😊 and am looking forward to getting to her eventually. I thought I hadn’t heard of Abdulrazah Gurnah but I have several of his books on my want to read list- very possibly because of your recommendation Eric!

I'm sure you'll find her writing really engaging and insightful. It's so good to see the surge in interest now in Gurnah's books and it's really encouraged me to read more. One of those quality writers who has suddenly now been highlighted because of the award.

I love your description of this book so much, and I’ve been meaning to read Ernaux for a while now! I’ll add it to the list! Also, her test of desire is hilarious! 😂 And I really want to read Gurnah’s work- I was vaguely aware of him because of Paradise being shortlisted for the Booker, but I’m keen to check out By The Sea now too!
