For our back yard camping, my son and I made this tent from the 10' x 12' ft tarp. IT'S THE BEST. Super-easy set up and plenty of room (we were joined by our large mutt and two of my daughter's cats). We rigged a floor from another tarp, as we were expecting rain - which it did, and we stayed dry. So far, it's our favorite two-man shelter. Thanks for posting the vid, my friend.

Whether the demo is out afield or in the backyard is not the point, which is the build itself. I don't care if it's done at Disneyland, the methods, procedures and final result is what I'm here for. Thanks for the informative video Chris!

i agree , most of the nay-sayers have probably not carried their whole pack AND all of the camera equipment . not easy i bet . i made a couple (not yet posted) and i didn't use much but the extra gear was a pain . i say kudos to all the guys who field film ,it's lots of work . and like you said , demo's can be done anywhere .

Great video. An 8 X 10 tarp is light and handy, and it is good to know. Shelter is the key word. Ultra light hiking and camping. That set up is the ticket. Tarp! Yes!

Cool rig. I remember Boy Scout campouts 50 years ago, We only had tarps at the time and half the fun was concocting a tarp set up to keep us out of the elements.

Is this the perfect tarp tent? I doubt it, but instead of making critical comments about somebody's else's efforts, this guy actually *does* something (and I appreciate it). Maybe you armchair critics should do the same (only better??).

Despite it being in his back yard, it was a good video. Temps were cold, dulling fine motor skills, so this is a good demo and training. BTW, backyard is where you want to prefect and train the motor skills rather than in BFE that is a lot less forgiving.

Thanks for taking the time. We all have 10x12 camo tarps. It gives a bit more room for not much weight. We cut a pole and set it inside and then tighten all the way around with stakes. Were your back pole is we tighten out to a sloping wall and duct tape a mylar blanket on that flat part. Catches the heat from the fire and warms things good. Again just a tiny bit of weight for the extra heat. Nice vid. I share it out.

Yeah, I have to agree. People do fires inside shelters all the time. Just have to be careful. Teepees were made for it. Dakota Fire holes work well. Dave had an old video called the "spider shelter" in which he had a small firepit inside. I personally wouldn't do it unless it was necessary. The Biolite stove is a good way to do it, as I showed in my Simple Shelters I/Biolite Stove video.

Good Video! Old subject! But just as a pointer, always pull taut the back you peg down as it allows places for the wind to get in under your tarp. I would also get a tarp clip and some line to pull up that slack in the roof where you put the old camera tripod leg.As another point I use the stainless steel/aluminum tent pegs because they take up less space and are just as strong. Keep on keeping on!

No. When I need to add grommets, I just use tarp clips instead. Stronger and doesn't hurt the integrity of the tarp. Plus gives you flexibility in coming up with something on the fly. They are crucial items in my list of "MacGuyver Items". I should do a video on those....

1st off, thanks Chris for your informational/product review videos, they really do help. As someone who spends most nights of the year outside. This is one configuration that I use frequently. The only differences would be that I use my frame pack as a back brace instead of a camera tripod leg, (LOL!) And, instead of running 1 guy line down from my walking staff, I run 2 one to each side. This way I can have that small fire.

Very cool I like that setup. It would be helpful if you would explain more than you could do it as you go along. Also it's hard to tell what kind of hardware and things you are using and what they look like. Perhaps walking in close to the camera to give people a close-up might be close-up look wondering what the tent clamp is and what kind of pegs you are using. Are using a nylon string or what? However it was a good idea to show us the nail at the end of your hiking stick very good idea. thank you can't wait to try it😊

Thanks for another nice vid, Chris. Love that you don't curse in your videos, can't tell you how often I watch vids with a child running about me. Hate all the F-bombs (although I'm sure I use plenty in the field myself) that others seem to insist on in their vids. Really been enjoying many of your vids. Backyard is fine, technique is the only point here and watching you walk around tightening up would've only made the vid longer w/o adding content. Naysayers are no matter.

I've used a tarp for camping, but I'm not ready to substitute a tarp for tent. In the summer, a tarp doesn't offer protection from mosquitoes or other pests, and in the winter, a tarp is too open to the elements. Nevertheless, during the spring and fall, when the threat of rain is low, a tarp can be a an effective alternative to a tent.

And these knots you assume I dont know will help this design... How exactly?
@xx8xx
10 жыл бұрын
PREPAREDMIND101 A simple clove hitch would allow you to attach your guy lines to your pole without the screw. A bowline or simple half hitch would allow you to tie to the front of your tarp so you could ditch the tarp clip... A taught line hitch would allow you to snug up the front, that would be especially helpful in a stiff wind...
@hm2mahoney

I Agree
@hoz49

***** The clove is good, but the constrictor hitch is better. I agree a tautline would be good on the standing pole line. Face it, you tube has made anyone who wants to go to the trouble of making and uploading a video think they are an expert, at WHATEVER, be it cooking, lawnmowers or wilderness skills.

Hoz Holla The Clove and Constrictor are both good for the purpose, depending on how long you expect to stay setup and how quickly you want to break down. The Constrictor can be a bear to untie after some rain :-)
