Very interesting and very cool! - I've got a similar indexing/dividing head that came with my Emco FB2 mill when I bought it, This video has given me the incentive to set it up and try it out! - there is about 5 plates which fit on the indexing head with differently spaced rows of holes going round (many are equally spaced holes on each row but of different measurements apart) for the indexing pin to lock into to divide stuff - now I see how it works! Thank you so much David for this brilliant video! **very, very grateful to you here!**

Hmm, spent the whole day cutting clock gears and tune in to myfordboy. Cutting gears with a spindexer. A spindexer is nice if you can get away with it. I had to build a dividing head for my tiny Proxxon mill. I have to write out a hole number list and number the holes in the plate. Much too easy to make mistakes with a dividing head. :( I look forward to watch you cut pinions.

HI thank you for the video. I have never seen a spin indexer in operation like that and understand it now. I also looked at part 5 and would like to ask if that model is designed to have additional plates? Or you just figured out how to make another index plate and made what you needed. I learn a lot from you every video. Thanks again.
@myfordboy

+JC S There are no addition plates available for the spin indexer. It will index 360 divisions using the vernier scale but I needed 14 so made this plate. using the hole number 5 like shown in the previous video it would be easy to also divide by 28 also using this plate.

+myfordboy Wow! How did you determine the size of the involute cutter?
@myfordboy
8 жыл бұрын
+JC S The cutter information is given in books. For each tooth size of gear ( DP or module) there are 8 cutters. Each cutter cuts a range of teeth number.The cutter in this video is 24DP 20 deg pressure angle and it's a number 2 cutter which does 55-134 teeth.

If the blank in the spindexer collet had a point instead of a female centre it could be brought to the cutter directly rather than using the scriber?

+JC S The gears were chosen to get the ratio I wanted and to fit in the space between the crankshaft and axle. If you want to learn gear cutting get the book " Gears and Gearcutting" by Ivan Law. it's the bible of gear cutting and not expensive.

Thanks again, I am in the process of making such wheel 72-16. I did not think of using the spin indexer, but it's an idea that I could look at. But what is the calculation to decide to use the sixth hole to start the next series?
@myfordboy
8 жыл бұрын
+Robert Patoine You can index 360 divisions. The disc has 36 holes so indexing one hole gives 10 deg with the pin in hole 0 each turn. To get say 11 deg. you put the pin in hole one instead of 0, so to get half a deg, like in this case, hole 5 is used. In the next video I will cut the matching gear which has 14 teeth, something to think about? Each division is 25.724 deg!

+Abdalla Elhagef I'm pretty sure he's adjusting the cutter to exactly the same height as the center of the gear. That way, the tooth points directly out from the center of the gear. A little high or low and your tooth would be at a slight angle to the radius of the gear and would not be able to mesh properly with another gear.

dear watch your video with awe ! i have among many things a myford ml10 the one with needle taper bearings in the head stock. on this mark there is no tumbler reverse,,, so...i am going to make one..!i have drilled the hole for the pivot point on the tumbler ,,,only to find that i am very limited to space....there is is insufficiente space for a 18 tooth cog a 17 would go the cog on the headstock is a 25.. ,,i will get there ! can you do me a great favour ? i have been in touch with myford .. even slipped up to mytholmroyd to have a chat and a cuppa,,, to no avail the smallest they make/sell are 20 so you see my dilemma what i need are 17 tooth cogs three to be exact you will of course be rewarded.. financialy when this is done ,,, i will have a bash at a power cross feed.. i m full of bright ideas in my late 70 s but will not sit in a corner. an veggitate .. so sir could you help an old man in his hour of need ? regards... laurence

The Myford wheels have a 0.625 bore, a 17 tooth 20DP gear with the same bore would only have 0.050" between the bottom of the teeth and the bore. This is why you can't buy one! My lathe does not have a tumbler reverse either and I can't say I have ever wanted one.

@@myfordboy thanks for your reply . i will figure it out some how . the tumbler gears can have a reduced bore and that could work .. thanks any way regards laurence
