Actually you can either power or charge the Canon R8 through its USB-C socket, but there are specific things that you need to do in order to make it work. 1) You'll need to USB-C charger or power bank, which supports FAST charging. 2) You will also need a USB-C to USB-C chipped charge cable. These cables have a built-in chip which negotiates the fast charge between the power source and the camera. 3) You MUST have a battery in the camera. N.B. USB-A to USB-C will NOT work. When the camera is switched-off, the power supply will charge the camera's LP-E17 battery, if the battery requires a charge. If a charge is being taken, the camera's green LED will light which is next to the delete button. If the camera is switched-on, it will be powered from USB, but the battery won't charge at the same time. I use an OTTERBOX Fast Charge Power Bank and a UGREEN USB-C to USB-C 100w Fast Charge cable.

I have purchased the small rig NPF battery plate professional as it has an 18w USB C output, turns out it isn't a PD USB C port therefore it only charges my camera when it is turned off and doesn't power it at all when the camera is on. Small rig has actually discontinued the battery plate this week, I'm guessing it due to people buying it for its USB C port which is pretty useless as being a videographer I'm not gone conituily turn of my camera between shots to make sire it charges, i could get a dummy battery but then i would be left with a cable that would be in the way of my hand grip which would look and feel stupid.

I appreciate your comment as it made me check why it wasn't working for my setup I will probably try and find a new battery plate for it

do you think USB-C to USB-C 60watts is good enough or it HAS to be 100w?

@@dablet Yes, I've just tried a 60w USB-C ZENS charger and it worked fine. Do note however that this method of charging ONLY works when a genuine Canon battery is installed in the R8. It will NOT work with a third party battery!

Havedummy battery but don’t know what cable I need to connect it to a portable battery. Cable looks like an audio jack fitting on dummy battery

Hi, I'm thinking about buying this product myself for an R8. How has this dummy battery worked out for you since the upload of this video? Has the camera been fried by the pack at all, or is it still going strong? I'm trying to find out if this is a reliable replacement for the official battery in the long term. Thank you!

The cheapest and most reliable way is to dummy battery to a USBA port 5V3A unregulalted cable. UsbA port cant output high voltage or crazy wattage so your R8 is safe. The new PD powerbank is very very powerful, can destroy your R8 instantly if your dummy battery adapter cable doesnt have a square box regulator built in.

I connected my r8 with samaung power bank(fully charged) via dummy battery and it says : charge battery. I can not record or take photos. Do you have any idea why? Is it important what is power output of the powerbank?
@dablet

Output has to be 5v and 2amps or greater

Thank you for your answer. I checked and my power bank has this voltage output (which you sad) and it is not working. I can turn on my camera, and go to menu but when I try to take a photo it says charge battery. Here is screen shot of my power bank spec. Please help ! Thx

Speaking for myself, I would find the following information useful: 1) it looks like there is a part you aren't mentioning - that cable that goes to the power bank. Did that come with one of these products, or did you buy it separately? 2) A cage solution of some sort - having a big power bank dangling from the camera all the time is not going to work for me.

@@dablet Gothca. Thanks! I don't think that all dummy batteries come with that extra cable, so if you do more videos like this, you might consider mentioning the existence or non-existence of the adapter cable.
