“If they never learned to pull - they DONT PULL” - simple as that.
Everything we allow dog to do - we teaching them something. Most of the times unintentionally..
When a 20 pound puppy walks in front of you and pulls on leash its ok for many people as the pulling not strong from tiny puppy. But the puppy learns that behaviour - to pull. In no time that little thing is 120+ pounds of Cane Corso. Powerful pounds.
Here is a simple way we start all our puppies as well teach our clients, cane corso or not.
Teach them to LIKE to be beside you on loose leash by rewarding that position. Starting with food, slowly developing strong relationship with your dog by communicating with him/her on the walks and in no time your dog will want nothing more but hang out by your side on walks.
Food is powerful reward. Use it in your training instead or in conjunction with feeding at home. Personally, i feed as many meals as possible to our dogs true training.
No you dog wont listen to you only when you have food if rewarding done properly - this is a core to imprinting behaviours. And the simplest fastest way to achieve it early on in dog’s life.
give food always in the same place - a place you want your puppy to be there.
dont drop food on the floor! If happened keep walking, dont let puppy stop and eat from the floor.
remember to “work” on the exercise in small sections- 30 seconds to a minute at first and remember to give your puppy brakes and let it be a dog in between- sniff ground, play and so on, gradually increasing the working time. Those little breaks are also form of reward. Puppy should stay engaged. Dont ask too much from your puppy if it is tired - we always want to build up for success, not failure.
use your voice! It is rewarding and encouraging for puppy.
Happy Training! @ivyleaguekennelcanecorso
