Appreciate you taking the time to help folks learn how to do these basic maintenance tasks. I agree that CCleaner is a great free program; however, I would take slight issue with one explanation you gave regarding the registry cleaner... CCleaner does not actually defrag the Windows registry; Rather it removes the expired registry entries. There are actual registry defrag tools that will defragment the registry and they require a reboot after running. Thanks again for taking the time to put together these kinds of video to help folks! :)

Temp files and _fragmentation of the file system_ are tied together. As the number of temp files, such as browser caches, grows in small increments, those files will get interleaved with new software and data files. This also applied to log files that grow in size by a few kB every time they're updated. You can literally "hear" disk fragmentation on older PCs as you update or uninstall software on them. For this reason, it is useful to separate %temp% files into their own disk partition, which can be erased during maintenance in one operation, without defragmenting other files. In some configurations that partition may be placed on a "ramdrive", in which case it will get wiped when the system is rebooted. Estimating the size of that partition can be tricky. I always limit the size of browser caches to around 1 gig. Things like Photoshop scratch disks go there. Maybe the swap file. Incomplete bittorrent downloads do not, because they are very large and should be downloaded in place on the drive where movies and music go. Completely uninstalling application software on a client's computer is probably not your decision to make. The client themselves might not even be able to answer if they use part of Adobe Creative Suite. They may use that thing that edits photos, without realizing it's part of Adobe CS. Good point about Windows updates. It's always best to do a clean install of a later OS, which in case of XP should be considered, because modern software will require at least SP2.

I have run the registry cleaner a few times but only when my computer gets really slow, because I was a little scared it would remove something vital. Now you have given me confidence to use it. I have never disabled start up items because of not knowing which ones to disable, but now you have explained I feel sure I can handle that as well. The main thing was knowing which ones should not be disabled, and you have put me straight on that.

Telling people not to do Windows updates is similar telling parents not to immunize their children, it's wrong and irresponsible. Most updates will not slow down your computer especially since modern computers have far more power than most people need. Having a computer that is significantly behind on updates will cause far greater security issues and potential computer slowness than an up to date computer. You might as well tell people to remove their anti virus because it uses resources and is slowing their computer down. If you aren't part of the solution you are part of the problem, meaning if you have security holes because you don't do Windows (and Java) updates then you potentially could be spreading viruses without your knowledge because of a known security issue. Home computer users should always install all Windows, Java and Adobe Flash player updades. The only people who should be concerned about the effects of updates are IT departments with dozens or hundreds of computers that likely have some sort of custom applications on them that may not function properly because of certain updates. Every one else should just do them.
@xXJeReMiAhXx99

lol, I never in my life have vaccined or immunized myself nor update windows and I also only use an anti virus when I need one(essentially never), I don't have any issues either.
@j7ndominica051

Windows updates may decrease the stability of the system, because they may not work together with other components and drivers of the system (which Microsoft hasn't considered); they may cause some piece of sotware or game to no longer work correctly, which an outside technician might not be able to detect. Updates leave parts of them behind, which increases the size and fragmentation of the Windows directory (winsxs). Installing a service pack takes a long time, and may fail partway through. If the OS is really obsolete (such as XP without any service pack), I'd consider and propose the client that the OS should be cleanly reinstalled with the latest SP already applied.
@DrayseSchneider
8 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't compare Windows Updates to vaccination. 1) It gives Antivax nuts the impression that you've given them ammunition 2) An antivirus program would be closer to vaccination, but even that's an imperfect analogy. 3) Updates should improve stability and performance. Presumably updates should also fix security holes as well.

After researching a bit on lost disk space I found one problem people are having, especially with older PC's is that their system restore points and shadow files have gotten very large. Since these files are hidden many aren't aware of it. If one uses the Windows system it will only allow you to delete all restore points up until the last one. And while this would free up perhaps dozens of gigabytes is this really a good idea? I understand the CCleaner will allow you to pick separate restore points for deleting. But then how do you determine which should be deleted? Sounds like a question for Eli.
@elithecomputerguy
9 жыл бұрын
+gotehorn If the system is working well there should be no issue. Restore Points are a bit of a last resort in general and so you shouldn't need to save a dozen of them if your system is working OK. Back in the old days I used to turn off Systems Restore entirely on my clients computers.

Or..,. I simply make a backup restore file on day one when my OS is clean and my software is just installed. Then when I feel the PC is lagging I do restore overnight. Yes, it will want to do updates, but I set things up to do automatic updates anyway. I generally advice people to use a Mac for personal use and LINUX for servers. Windows... only for games. And no matter what OS, careful of two things. Anti virus software and Adobe Suite. They can each easily use up a third of the CPU. I recommend disabling Adobe and Antivirus. on laptops and tablets.

To MrAgnostic, AVG and Norton in some cases can work together but whether or not you're seeing issues immediately doesn't mean that they won't eventually clash. There are a few "resident" anti-virus software that will work together but generally Norton can be very quick to throw it's weight around in your computer whereas AVG tries to provide a looser feel in my opinion. I recommend a combination of AVG, Spybot Search and Destory, and Malwarebyes Anti-Malware. If you can spring for it though I recommend Vipre Internet Security, it'd be the only damn thing you'd need.

I used to use CCleaner, but the last time I used it it changed something and the system would no longer boot. I had backed up the registry but restoring it didn't work, neither did restore points. I wound up reinstalling windows. Which is a pain, but not that really big of a deal since I now use an SSD for my operating system and I keep all my important files (documents and libraries) linked to a second hard drive which I backup to a third external hard drive and also to DVDs. I just found out about M-discs, I'm going to move to that for my most important files, my best (or important) pictures, text files, letters, reviews, taxes, graphics and 3D artwork.

Do updates start taking up more and more RAM, or do they also use other resources like the CPU?

what I like to do is right off the bat partition my hard drive with a smaller c:/ with about 25GB of extra space for updates.then make a few extra partitions, for movies files etc... (what this does is with the fragmented files have smaller areas to be placed) add a second hard drive old drive you got laying around. (doesn't matter as you will not be using this for data storage ) set this drive as your virtual memory drive,

I have a couple of issues with this video. First, the Registry cleanup in CCleaner. Aside from the fact that I don't run it, the fact that you call it a Registry Defrag is untrue. You remove orphaned entries, but you do not reorder the Registry itself. Second, you mention not defragging the hard drive. You should schedule a defrag based on user's schedule of PC usage. Third, Windows Updates are essential to secure computing. It may slow a PC down a tad, but an outdated PC is vulnerable.

one tip on defragmenting: large files like videos take VERY long for the computer to defrag, unless you just move them to another clean (maybe external) drive .. and back if you want. it makes the diference between a few minutes and many hours! (i'm too lazy to explain why it works, but i promise it does!)

Just re-install Windows. Make sure you have the activation key for Windows and all the programs you bought. Save your personal files on an external drive. If you can't find your Windows activation key, ask your vendor if it's embedded in the motherboard and how to re-install Windows.

hi there Excellent after a brain tumour I was unable to do physical work I decided to learn more about PC's found I could do that, I found myself agreeing with many of your comments even though I was not "classical trained" I reached many of the same conclusions. one annoying problem I have found with windows is the startup time and the startup display bar taking 70 to 80 passes before windows started properly without any problems showing - suspect drivers - all drivers report up to date. - any ideas ?
