Three excellent methods are presented here. I will continue to use the assumption that all angles are in degree form for this problem. A fourth method: Using the initial right triangle constructed in the third method (labeled "another approach"), we see that sin10 = x/sqrt(1 + x^2) and cos10 = 1/sqrt(1 + x^2). Now we substitute into the formula tan(t/2) = (1 - cost)/sint and simplify.

My first impulse was method #2, but when you showed method #3 it made me smile. It was so delightful! Then I got so excited that I had to do method #4 as follows: We know tan(45°) = 1, and tan(30°) = √(3) / 3 So then we can calculate tan(15°) = tan(45°-30°) = (tan(45°) - tan(30°)) / (1 + tan(45°) tan(30°)) = (1 - (√(3) / 3)) / (1 + (√(3) / 3)) = (skipping some steps) = 2 - √(3) And, finally, tan(5°) = tan(15°-10°) = (tan(15°) - tan(10°)) / (1 + tan(15°) tan(10°)) = (2 - √(3) - x) / (1 + (2 - √(3)) x)

@@dqrk0 Of course, I know that this result is not original and I've found formula (1-cos x)/(sin x) in my handbook after I've got the formula, but it looks so weird, that I decided to post it. And it is useful for solving the problem in the video.

Clever. I took the long way for the 3rd solution. y=5 tan(2y) = x cos(2y)/sin(2y) = 1/x (cos²y - sin²y)/(2sinycosy) = 1/x (2cos²y - 1)/(2sinycosy) = 1/x cosy/siny - 1/(2sinycosy) = 1/x But 1/(2sinycosy) = 1/sin2y and sin2y = x/√(x²+1) so cosy/siny = 1/x + √(x²+1)/x tany = x / ( √(x²+1) + 1 ) As you can see, I am far too important to spend my time memorizing double angle tangent identities, much less half angle ones. 😅 PS - if I had instead chosen - (1 - 2sin²y)/(2sinycosy) = 1/x that would have led directly to - tany = ( √(x²+1) - 1 ) / x Иван (Ivan, commenting earlier) noticed that identity in his solution.

Actually, you get the same result if you you used this approach too. tan(5°) = tan(10° - 5°) =》 u = (x - u)/(1 + xu) Where, tan(5°) = u, and tan(10°) = x u + xu^2 = x - u xu^2 + 2u - x = 0 Using the quadratic formula: u = (-2 +- sqr(4 + 4x^2))/2x u = (sqr(x^2 + 1) - 1)/ x = tan5
