Older driver had more actual track time and testing. When Alonso and Hamilton started F1 they had more than an entire F1 season of testing. Literally up to 10,000km of testing V10 and early V8 cars. One thing I always thought about is that in real life there is no lag input/output, minus like tire flex, while in any form of digital driving there is always some input/output lag that you then have to compensate for in the way you drive and react. I'm assuming that means in real life after getting used to sim racing you are hyper responsive compared to a regular driver, because you learned how to pick up a cars driving traits from a delayed perspective while sim racing. I'm assuming this helps be more on top of knowing what your car is doing than a regular driver.

Not to take anything away from sim racers, but the reason they’re fast is because it’s a fearless race. I can drive my car on the edge, if I make a mistake the worst thing that could happen is I lose. I remember that video of the autonomous track car. I can’t remember what it was. But they had a real race car driver who if he felt the cars computer was out of control and would wreck the car he would take over. Anyway I remember him saying it was breaking way way later like he would never wait that long. It was fearless. In saying that at higher level I’m nowhere close. real racing is a game to Max Verstappen. He just has to drive and provide feedback in a real race and the engineers/staff does the rest. Anyone who's done set up in a sim knows how mind gruelling that stuff is, and most people DO NOT enjoy it. Most people just want to drive a car that works to their liking.

Not to take anything away from sim racing, but no. What elevated him in real life racing was taking the van with his dad Jos and drive from The Netherlands to Italy to compete against kids a few years older than him. That's a single trip 10 to 12 hour drive, each racing competition weekend, to race in the toughest European karting competition. What elevated him in real life racing was having a dad who had been an F1 driver, but also having a mother who competed at world level karting, driving against drivers like Jenson Button, Nick Heidfeld, Jarno Trulli and Giancarlo Fisichella. Hilariously, his mother, Sophie Kumpen, also competed in karting against a certain Christian Horner. Yes, _that_ Christian Horner. His DNA, from both his mom and his dad, and his relentless upbringing from a very young age in karting, elevated him to one of the greatest talents of all times. Sim racing will undoubtedly help him, but that same edge is enjoyed by the likes of Lando Norris, Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc, to name a few, who also sim race while being an active F1 driver.

I don't understand the title... What does sim racing have to do with gaming??? Apart maybe from Steam as a platform to download everything with (ironically not even this necessarily has to be the case with iRacing) and beefy PC internals?

It’s really great for sim racing to be taken more serious by the masses that still see it as a video game that’s pointless. But it also shows just how far off sim racing still is from real racing. Let’s be honest, all the people faster than max climbed into his f1 car or even put them both in a real gt3/gt2 car and they wouldn’t be a second within his lap time. It’s hard to be top 10 fast on a sim when you’ve spent your entire life racing in real cars. There’s just certain things you can’t do in a real car that sims allow you to do.. but being in a real car most your life trains your brain to drive a sim like it’s a real car as where sim racers would struggle driving a real car. David Perel who is a real life gt3 driver struggles at acc or gt sport because he drives with a real car world mindset and muscle memory.
@Cernunn0s90

Max was immediately good when he joined iRacing, and extremely quickly shot up to be within the 0.1% of drivers. Definitely proves to me how direct the skill transfer is. David Perel is a far lesser sim driver compared to Max, or Lando. Why the transfer of skill works better for some and not others probably comes down to many factors. I haven't watched Perel in a good while, but the last time I did, I could point out quite a lot of things just plain wrong with his setup and settings. The main challenge is that sim-drivers have to drive almost completely with their eyes, while IRL drivers are used to feeling things with their butt. That can definitely be a hurdle.
@MelfjeProductionS

Well it's quite obvious right. You have so much less information on a simulator then in real life. All of the information comes from your wheel or your buttkicker. Real life racers have much more info especially on the tires.

You have to remember David Perel, while he is good, is not on the top level in real world either. He is a silver ranked driver and even admits himself that he is not on the level of best gold and platinum ranked pro-drivers. So probably about the same level he is on sim racing, in sim racing there is just more people at the top since it is not as much about money. Also I bet many of those who are fast in sim would become really fast in a real car (at least up to GT3 level) if they would get a few practice days and do some excercise to adapt to the g-forces. Obviously not all could do it but I don't think there is that much difference apart from good physical condition needed for real thing and obviously little bit of bravery.
@fabidroidneo

Sim is getting every time more closer to real life, either way you need some skills to be fast in both. I agree in real drivers are prepared to be fast in real cars,and thinking and driving in Sim like real world,but repeat Sim is getting closer and closer to real driving.

When sim racers are put behind the wheel of a real car, it usually takes them roughly 15 minutes to adjust to the g-forces of the real car. After that they start clocking in the same lap times as they do in the sims.

@CleanPipes Sim racing is one of the main places where racing companies go to scout for new drivers, these days. There are a ton of professional drivers that started in sim racing. I've heard of quite a few, but Jimmy Broadbent is the only one I know by name. If you have a good enough record in iRacing or Assetto Corsa Competizione, you may just get an email from a racing company.
@mrnobody6609

@CleanPipes The whole sore neck thing is inevitable. The only way to really "train" it would be to actually jump in a car and eventually get used to it. I imagine all of the real drivers have had the same issues when they started, kinda like sore fingers for guitar players (we all go through it). As far as F1 goes, I don't think they'll ever put a sim racer in one of those cars until he's proved himself elsewhere. They're just too expensive. As far as sim racers pulling similar times goes, I've seen a handful of videos of racing teams throwing sim racers in a real car on a track-day. They all ended up with similar times as they get in sims, after a few laps. I actually just watched a video the other day of a guy that won a drifting championship in Assetto Corsa (sim), and his prize was a day in a real pro drift car. He was pretty out of shape himself, but it didn't seem to hinder him. As far as watching races goes, I don't get much of an opportunity to, but every once in a while I'll catch a GT3 or GT4 race. I feel like I always hear the announcers going on about how 'such and such' driver started out on a sim.
@tkpenalty

@CleanPipes while that is true before, a lot of sim racing orgs have started to focus on the fitness of their drivers, so its less relevant these days
