This is one of two Latin American gang dramas I've seen recently, the other one being "Heli"....this is what I love about non-Hollywood cinema, there is absolutely no holding back on reality. Harrowing stories without cheeseball writing, brilliant acting, directing and cinematography, and they tackle real world problems. Captures reality in a way that Hollywood could never hope to do. They need to learn from these films. 5 stars

reefrunner These movies actually translate the violence and terror there is in these South American streets. Great people actually appreciate these works of art :) If you are in to this type of stuff (getting mad depressed) Then our Brazilian brothers have a movie called "God's City" I thought it was a really great movie. But I'd have to say that this movie contains violence like it really is in life...

+og_kip That was the greatest movie I've seen in my life. Not just my favourite Brazillian film, but my favourite film of all time. It broke my heart how tragic the story was. Sin Nombre was also really good. It made me care about a character I dispised at first

Absolutely amazing film. Grippingly raw, realistic, tragic and moving, I fell into this story and was held there, the entire duration of the film, by my heartstrings. Beautifully shot and edited and superbly cast, this very relevant tale of a young man trying desperately to escape poverty and a gang life he had almost no choice but to accept after the bitter betrayal of someone he thought was "family" threatens not only his existence but that of anyone he comes in contact with. Once seen, this story will never leave you, because it happens every day on the U.S./Mexican borders.

Hi. I read your comments Meli. Here a latinamerican living in Spain who do like films, and movies about Spanish culture, Latinamerican heritage, and Latinamerican nowaday living in North America. The movies you write down were La Lengua de las Mariposas (Language of Butterflies), and Laberinto del Fauno (labyrinth of Faun), both about education policies in Franco Spanish Dictatorship (1936-1978) , Catholic religion, and Spanish Society. I don´t know if there were a English Subtitle translation of these movies. Maybe the School wanted for you to take not a very religion view but the another view, a non-religion one, because thats what this films were about. A somehow criticism of Catholic religion on those Spanish times.

To me, the more fascinating story in this movie was that of "Smiley," the young boy inducted into the gang who adopts its violent subculture as his own. One of the most disturbing scenes is of him sitting on the monkey bars with children his own age casually discussing plans of murder. I used to work in a community where kids his age were being "jumped in" to gangs, and some of them were killing each other by their mid-teens. This is not in a big city. It may be going on just down the street from you now.
