I don't uniform my primer pockets but I must admit that I have considered buying a tool for this job. After watching your view I'm now convinced that it should be done. Accurate reloading is all about consistency and this tool will create that. Thanks for another quality video.

Thanks for the comment. I will certainly be testing to see of it really matters. I hate buying tools just because, but if it does help I hate not to take advantage of something I could be. Stay tuned and eventually I will let you know if it make a difference.

For me it's not only a uniform depth tool to SAAMI specs but it also cleans out the primer pocket. It really doesn't remove any brass as much as it cleans out the primer pocket of carbon. Another tool is flash hole deburring tool. I've seen many flash holes of inconsistent roundness and size. But not all brass is the same and you typically find better consistency in "better" brass. I believe that straight uniform flash is consistent with uniformity which is consistent with accuracy. Every reloader has to decide how much time and effort each task is worth to their objectives.

Hey I know that I am weighing in very late on this topic but it has been the subject of some discussion down at the local sandpit. I am thankful to have several serious bench rest guys at the range. Although our goals are quite different, there are several that are adamant about primer pocket uniforming and their claims for easy and basic improvement with groups. My tools are on the way and I guess I'll see any improvement. Always thankful for your great videos!

The processing of the case invelves a bunch of little things that add up. Trimming uniformly, Taking care of the primer hole and pocket, deburring and chamfering and other things all add up to make a difference. I hope to one day see manufactures make brass that all have the same length and weight. As of know unless you pay a premium you won't get brass that is ready to be used so reloader needs to finish processing the brass. Thank you for permuting the culture of doing things the right way.

I ream the flash holes and I run my uniformer in all of my brass because it’s the process that I feel good about. I spend much more time reloading because I enjoy it as much if not more than than the actual shooting. Besides, the primer pocket uniformer is a GREAT way to clean all of the schmout out of the pocket and I just feel better. I’ve never had one of my loads fail to fire and it is just relaxing to me!

Good stuff, nice tool. I've used the Lyman for a while and like it, but it doesn't have the power adapter so it's like screwing in 100 deck screws with your hand. Pain..! I'll look in to this as an option.!

The Lyman tool I bought 2 weeks ago has a bit that can be unscrewed from the handle and used with your drill. Works great.

When using either the power drill or hand tool, I personally think you should remove the drill bit after a few drill rotations to get the shavings out of the primer pocket for a more uniform cut. Otherwise, all the brass shavings have no where to go and won't make as uniform of a cut. Just my .02 cents :)

I know this a four years old video but, a lubricant is needed for cutting the brass as it is a soft metal and will gall easily. WD-40 works quite well as it is mostly kerosene. The primer pocket cutter needs lubrication for the cutter tip, but also the side of the cutter shaft, and the cutter holder where it will stop against the cartridge head. To clean the lubricant from the cartridge cases, either run in a polisher with new ground corn cob of wash with hot water with a something like Simple Green and dry the cases in a oven spread out a large cookie sheet for about an hour at 150°F-175°F.

I have used a Forrester flash hole tool for several years and it did make a significant improvement in extreme spread and standard deviation numbers. The pocket being in uniform is secondary to the flash hole being the same size and more importantly, the same depth. Yes I said same depth, there is extra brass material around the inside of the flash hole that needs to be uniform so the spark jump from primer to powder is the same. This will improve accuracy and shot to shot consistency

I believe this process is negligible in regards to accuracy.......I go through the trouble of doing this for reliability. I need the primer to be seated squarely and in the right depth in the pocket for a reliable primer strike. when it comes to target shooting and such no big deal, but for my carry loads my life may literally depend upon it!

I guess I’m missing something, what is this tool for again? in 30 years of reloading I have never had a primer pocket I felt needed material removed, had many that were loose and would love to be able to add material but never remove material. I honestly don’t get it can someone explain?
@BoltActionReloading

Hi David, Well I am not promising anything. I believe the idea is " This step is important as variations in the seating depth of the primer can change how the firing pin strikes the primer producing inconsistent ignition." I haven't seen much difference yet, but I am hoping to do more work on this soon.

Can you measure the depth you are cutting your primer pockets to. I have the hornady brand uniformer and don't really know what to set it to. I've read .130 to .131, but when I measure my brass most of the primer pockets at .132 to .135.

Just wondering about weakening the brass around the flashhole.? I'm new to this method and am by nature careful and sceptical. Thanks.

I bought a cheap Lyman primer pocket uniformer tool and I think it cut to deep. Now my primers are seated below the case head by just a little and loose in some of my win brass and FC brass. Not sure if it was possible to cut too deep but I think it did. Probably should have read the directions first. Oops. We will see how they fire and if the primers pop out when firing I will toss the brass. Not sure if it really will even make a difference. Maybe should have got an adjustable uniformer or maybe used different primers now

@BoltActionReloading

The lee cleaner and this uniformer are not the same product by a long shot. This removes has carbide blades to remove material to ensure that all the depths of your primer pockets are consistent. This should help get more consistent primer seating. Whether that is important to you is another story. The lee scraper is only to clean carbon out of the primer.
