I am repeating this story as there may always be those who don't know it. Hugh Martin was a young man and was grumbling in his seat during a rehearsal of BOYS FROM SYRACUSE, complaining of how boring "Sing for Your Supper" was. Rodgers overheard him and told him that if he thought he could improve the song, to do so. The next day, Martin returned with this vocal arrangement. And was put on the road to Broadway and Hollywood success. A few years later, the director of BOYS, George Abbott, directed Martin's BEST FOOT FORWARD, a show that propelled many in the cast and creative team to Hollywood.

Rogers was such a different composer with Hart as opposed to Hammerstein. Cass Elliot did a fantastic cover of this when she was with the Mamas and the Papas

Sing for your supper, and you'll get breakfast Songbirds always eat If their song is sweet to hear Sing for your luncheon, and you'll get dinner Dine with wine of choice If romance is in your voice. I heard from a wise canary, Trilling makes a fellow willing So, little swallow, swallow now Now is the time to Sing for your supper and you'll get breakfast Songbirds are not dumb They don't buy a crumb of bread It's said... So sing and you'll be fed. I heard from a wise canary, Trilling makes a fellow willing So, little swallow, swallow now Now is time to sing for your supper, And you'll get breakfast. Songbirds are not dumb They never buy a crumb of bread It is said... So sing, and you'll be fed, oh yeah Just sing and you'll be fed.

Thanks for that!. Now we can get the wit and the subtext of the song that vanished with this awful performance. Read what the songs all about and then tell these opera diva's that they're in the wrong room.

A shining example why opera singers should never attempt Broadway show tunes. The lyrics here are what matter most, and it's impossible to understand then them. Great, witty song, really awful interpretation. I found this painful.

The three are really singing in different styles. Fleming is the least stylistically correct, whereas Horne actually has a very good Merman-esque belt going on.
