I wonder why the 301 would be more expensive than the 404. ??

If you are referring to the expense of these machines today, my only guess is that the 301 shares its bobbin and hook style with the Singer Featherweight.

I just purchased this model at a tag sale. YAY!!! I am not experienced enough to do a full restoration on her but she needs some real cleaning. I hope this will be the only problem I come across....I can’t move the throat plate position to up or unlock. The lever moves a little but not enough. I pulled the plate up and out with a screwdriver, oiled, hit it with a blow dryer but it’s still not budging. I can’t seem to get that big plastic screw out to see if there is a problem there. Where do I go from here? Thanks in advance.

Mary Ann Livingston, generally speaking these machines can still be fixed by sewing machine repair professional. I inherited one from my grandmother almost 30 yrs ago. It had an issue with the tension mechanism that was broken. It hadn't been used for many years prior to that. I finally sent it out to be fixed and it was fixable. I will have to post about how it runs. I never used the machine so I am learning how to use it.

Mary Ann Livingston, you might want to check out Andy Tube on his KZitem channel. He has done many restoration videos on the 404.

Thank you. So helpful as I fine tune the two 404's that I own.

I have this very machine, that I inherited from my grandma. I learned to sew on it in Home Ec, as well. I love mine! It is highly intuitive to use, very reliable, and remarkably capable of sewing a variety of fabrics. I will keep mine forever. How do you think the 404 compares to the 201?

Both machines are Heirloom quality and wonderful sewers. They each form lovely stitches because they both use a "Rotary Style" hook design with a top loading bobbin. Some sewers might give the edge to the 201 for 'stitch perfection' though this can be subjective. The 404 has the slanted needle which some folks find convenient. Due to high demand by quilters and fine garment sewers (wedding gowns for instance), the 201 brings higher prices but the 404 has nothing to apologize for. AND, you can get a 404 for very little $. So there's that......

I'm interested in the 404 as straight stitch machine for quilting. Do you have an opinion on that purpose.

Hi Alicia. I have met many quilters over the years who I have done sewing machine restorations for. I have noticed a preference for strong machines that have rotary hooks. (NOTE: There are lots of exceptions to this but its a pattern I have observed ). As such, the 404 has a wonderful rotary hook and makes very straight and consistent stitches. These characteristics are also found in the Singer 301 and Singer Featherweight. One difference for the 404 though is that is uses a bobbin that is a "drop-in" style or Class 66 bobbin unlike the 301 and Featherweight which have side loading bobbins. The reason this matters (to some quilters) is that they may find side loading bobbins easier to re-thread while keeping the quilt in place without having to reinstall it since drop-in bobbins often require removing a quilt in order to access the bobbin. The 404 as well as other Class 66 machines can make great workers for Quilt Piecing and Quilt Block construction. For the actual quilting of all your layers, you might consider an additional machine. Many quilters own more than one machine although Im sure many of our ancestors were able to do amazing things with just one machine. Given the power and great stitch that the 404 has, I would suggest speaking with fellow quilters you know and ask them to share their thoughts on which bobbin type they prefer depending on which quilting function they are working on. Drop-in vs. side loading bobbins will bring out lots of opinions on which is more convenient. Thanks so much for your comment and good luck with you decision!! If anyone here can share your thoughts on the pros and cons of bobbin type for quilters, please feel free to share with Alicia and the rest of us!

I know Im off topic. Do you prefer the 66 over the 15 series. If so why? Thanks
@VintageSewingMachineGarage
2 жыл бұрын
As is often the case with many choices, I don't have a strong favorite for either of these over the other. Each has its strong points. The 15 series is considered the strongest; most stout domestic machine ever made. (Others may have different opinions). Having said that, the 66 is legendary and arguably the strongest 'TOP LOADING" machine ever made for domestic use. Some folks prefer top loading models even though the bobbins for these hold a little less thread and the 66 has a bit wider throat space for when working on larger items. So, I would say both of these are two of the toughest machines ever made. It just depends on what projects you want to sew that can help you decide which is 'best'.

@@VintageSewingMachineGarage thanks for the reply. Good pros and cons. I just bought both the other day. I think the 15-91 will be my go to. And the 66 my backup.

How does it sew leather?
@VintageSewingMachineGarage

Hello. Some people will sew on light weight garment leather, but I don't think this is the best sewing machine for that purpose. Something such as the Singer 15-91 might be better suited for that purpose.

How can I find someone to work on one of these or what is the value?

You might try any of the sewing service centers in your area or ask them for any names of retired service technicians. Parts for these should not be difficult at all to find. It may take a bit more patience to find the service, but you will find someone if you are persistent. You can also join Yahoo groups under the heading "Vintage Singer Sewing Machines" etc. and ask for any leads that might be in your geographic area. Good luck in your search.
