As a domestic abuse survivor... this guy deserved a medal not jail

I generally agree, but my father was abusive when I was a toddler. He's better now that he's older and hasn't drank in 20 years. He can't even remember many things from when I was little and I take care of him nowadays. My sister's baby daddy that beat her when she was pregnant could move on if he ever tries something again.

I just want to let you know that as a man I am so so sorry for what you have endured. I have been married for 30 years and never once has the thought ever crossed my mind to hit or harm my wife in any way. I know the constant torture that those who have been abused either verbally, violently or sexually endure for the rest of their life. I will not go into details because it is not my story to tell but it makes it almost impossible to ever trust a man again. And unless the abused woman finds a man who understands and is willing to give up or compromise concerning intimacy and trust them she has to live with her torment alone for the rest of her life.

I told my girlfriend to wait in the truck. It had nothing to do with either of us. There was a girl across the road getting drug around by the hair of her head. We drove by. I saw that . My girlfriend said don't get involved. I told her what if it was your daughter would you not want someone to get involved. I told her to call the law and wait in the truck.

First, there was a time when that's exactly what many men would do, my mama's people are from Appalachia and many have been holed up in the mountains for enough generations those values stuck, my cousin hit me once after he turned 16, we thought my grandpa was going to beat him to death, it was bad, men in our family do not hit women...he told him he wouldn't get another beating if he hit a female again...we all knew what he meant And my grandpa would never have been considered violent by anyone, he raised me and I had never seen him like that, but he was a man of his word that we all knew to be true

This song has won quite few awards and it means world to DV survivors like me. My father was 80 and a crack shot. He did not miss. If I'd told him what my ex was doing to me. He would have shot my ex dead while I waited in the truck. No doubt. But at 80, I just couldn't burden him with that. My ex got side chick and she was my saving grace. He chose her over our son and me. She gave me what I needed to get divorce as I dragged his name thru mud by telling truth of what he did to me. Great reaction! May God bless you always. BTW, my daughter in law let me know my ex has side chick now wife, running scared just like I did. Well, what goes around comes around. Huh?

I tend to think about the man's back story in this one. Was his mother/sister/aunt/best friend in an abusive relationship? Maybe he saw the system fail them and they were killed because of it. I don't know that is the case but I also don't know that it isn't. I am a survivor of DV, it was long ago. My abuser was shot in the chest by a police officer as he charged at him with a knife in each hand. I am here today, a grandmother, because that man isn't. I know it sounds harsh, but an abuser never stops abusing until he is stopped by force. Great reaction, thanks for sharing.

First time I heard this song I was driving on the freeway and had to pull over cause I couldn't see from crying so hard. He traded his life for hers. when he pulls up(a free man) she was in her own Prison from being abused. at the end when you see her walking away feet free of shackles and him in shackles it shows the exchange of his life for hers. and she also drives away in his truck free just like he drove in a free person in the beginning. After he pulls the trigger it cuts to her in the truck breathing a sigh of relief.

My first memory as a child was seeing my father try to unalive my mom by choking her. I saw all her bruises, even in the photos the police took of her when she called the cops. But she always dropped the charges, not because she loved him, but because she felt she had nowhere to go. After a while, when he was about to start in, she would turn on a tape recorder she had hidden, so if he unalived her, there would be some proof. He soon started to abuse me and I had my head slammed into walls many times. I would have welts on my back from being beaten with an extension cord, from the tops of my shoulders to the back of my knees, hidden under clothes. That went on until I was 17. One day I had enough. I decided he was going to get a taste of his own medicine . I put him in the ICU for 2 weeks (FYI: I was 5'4" 110 lbs, he was a swarthy 5'11" cop). A friend of the family was told why this happened, so he told my father to drop the charges or he'd regret it. So he did. But even if he hadnt, it was worth it knowing he'd never touch me or my mom again. I made sure the he knew if he step outta line, well... I would have no problem putting him in a hole. And it stays with you. I lived in an apartment where I heard two men on the floor above me, commiting dv. I called the cops numerous times, told that apartment complex, but nothing was done. I was not able to sleep those nights. I kept hearing the cries, and suddenly the memories were coming back. We moved a month later. I'm not saying I would do the same thing he did. But I'm not saying I wouldn't either. PTSD does weird things to you.

I’ve always assumed he did for her what he had been unable to do for his mother. That’s why he didn’t ask if she wanted to go to the police or a women’s shelter. He knows some men won’t stop until someone dies. He also didn’t seem to have much of a life. He doesn’t mention having to explain this to his wife and children, or being concerned about leaving them without protection. Domestic violence damages people in so many ways.

In the song it says that he shot him before he got 12 he was reaching for. To me the sounds like he went in there to give him a beating but when he reached for a gun he's shot him. While normally that would be a good self-defense case since the guy broke into his house to beat him up he ended up in jail. And him smoking a cigarettes and waiting was him taking responsibility for his actions by waiting for the cops instead of trying to run or hide evidence or anything like that. Ultimately I felt strongly enough about it that he was willing to trade his freedom for hers and thought it was all worth it in the end because he saw how much better her life was. And she still waiting in the truck for him and thankful for what he did.

He could say that but it won't fly in court. He walked in knowing if he walked out what his chances were of not having to do time, but as a survivor of DV, they should have given him a medal. They don't stay in jail when you put them there sometimes so hell is better place to send them.

As a domestic violence survivor... the law didn't do anything, until I went to a judge for a full protection order. And even after the judges order the law enforcement never implemented anything. I spent 3 days out of the 7 days each week in the police station filing report after report, for 3 months. Just for the prosecutor to ignore. Mostly true- I was deeply shocked by a recent video where virtually every Mom from a NE city refused to agree they would kill for their child... ever. I grew up "in the sticks" on California's coastal small towns and rural area, but raised my girls in "the city" of a sprawling busy County with half a dozen more Counties just like it all around- and they KNEW I held them to standards, but would straight kill any real threat without blinking an eye or ever feeling guilt. And they are now mothers themselves, both in busy urban and suburban areas- and would kill without hesitation to protect or have vengeance for their own. So I guess you have to have it bred out of you with generations of docile reliance on authority to lose the fierce parental bond and independent understanding that it is your responsibility to deal with evil directly and immediately.

To add to the other comments... he was not a bad man, he was not an evil man... perhaps he grew up in a house of abuse.... as he knew what had happened to her without asking... he was a man who saw a need, saw an evil and acted on that need and evil. He was a man of faith (evidenced by the court scene bridge (Oh Lord have mercy on me was not asked to the court system... it was a plea to God) and visibly evidenced by the cross hanging on his rear view mirror... was his action legal, obviously not based on the trial, was it morally just.... that is up to each individual for you cannot legislate morality... but for every victim of DV, he would be an answered prayer... and for every man... the story forces the question... "what would I do?" I recently picked up on another aspect of the acting...you can see the transfer of 'weight' from the weight on her as a DV victim... to him, as the reality of what he did sank in looking at the body on the floor... she has her weight lifted as she no longer has to live that life... and the weight of the decision he made settles onto his shoulders, heart and mind.

Any man that would leave a woman that he supposedly cares for .. bloody and beaten out in the weather in the dead of the night lost and alone.. I don't think there is a question to what to do.. Especially if your a real man.. not a modern all about myself one.. a real one.. who opens doors, stands up when she is at the table, walks beside her facing the street to protect.. and bust his ass daily for his family or friends or a dream.. no complaints.. just lean back on it and let the world beat away.. I've asked myself a few times what I would do when seeing this video a couple of times now.. the tears in this old Marines eyes tell me exactly what I'd do.. without remorse or hesitation. In Texas we call folks and animals who are useless or a drain on the system.. Culls.. And nothing wrong with getting rid of Culls!
