Had a great time at the 17th Singfest, a glorious weekend of harmony singing in a beautiful Surrey woodland setting.
We all learnt 4 songs arranged by each of the talented musical directors who make up the singing quartet ‘Oaken’, then split into 2 choirs which were taught different arrangements by Jamie Dawes-Hughes and compositions by Ali Burns.
All songs were a cappella (voices only). This video is everybody learning ‘Au Revoir’ composed by Anna Tabbush. In Oaken workshops, all 4 members teach and assist the different voice parts (Soprano, Alto, Tenor & Bass), which is a great way to learn and helps you keep on your notes.
The songs were very varied in style: Emily Barden taught us a great arrangement of ‘Everybody’s Got To Learn Sometime’ by the Korgis; We sang a fun Latin American song ‘Chippi Chippi’ arranged by Camilo Manjura; Dominic Stichbury’s arrangement was of a Jackie Wilson soul hit ‘The Sweetest Feeling’.
I was in choir A for the other sessions: Ali Burns taught us one of her recent compositions ‘Do not carry a heavy heart’, Jamie’s arrangement was a very different style - the title track to the movie ‘Grease’!
Thanks to the 6 tutors and the many helpers who made this a great weekend - I look forward to Singfest 2024!
