Exercises, adrenaline, intense physical effort… Much like top-level athletes, singers must ardently prepare themselves before going on stage, even if it means suffering. Sonya Yoncheva, soprano, and Benjamin Bernheim, tenor, discuss the physical challenges they face in their profession.
“Like every athlete, regardless of the discipline, you don't build a muscle by going slowly. You build muscle by pushing yourself. Some of my American colleagues even go so far as to say: “If you don't feel the taste of blood in your mouth, you are not pushing hard enough”, explains Benjamin Bernheim.
And yet, you have to deliver an intense performance on stage, without the audience sensing the effort involved. “The real job of a singer is above all to make the audience believe that everything we do, singing, playing on stage, is something natural that comes effortlessly. That is really difficult,” adds Sonya Yoncheva.
