Hi, I’m Abram from 30 Day Singer and this lesson is all about exercises that are specifically helpful for Tenors.
While any qualified teacher can provide insights and train singers with other voice types than their own, they are probably going to have specific tips based on first hand experience for their own voice type. I’m a Tenor and so these tips are based on what I have found most helpful for my own voice type through my own personal experience.
As a quick review the Tenor range is usually from C3 through A4 in Chest Voice with some upper advanced limits at C5. Head voice can go pretty high topping out around F6 or a little higher in extreme situations. The range sits between the Baritone range on the bottom and Contralto and Alto range on the top.
Since Tenor is the highest of the lower voice types it can actually be pretty difficult to have a full sounding lower range. Singing in the higher part of your voice more frequently tends to get our vocal muscles over engaged and so they have a hard time relaxing down and sounding more rich and full. This will often carry up the higher register making for an overly bright nasal or harsh sounding voice.
A great way to balance out this tendency is to work on non-pressed exercises that fill out the notes in your lower register. Try this exercise with me and we’ll focus on relaxed breath support plus more of a back placement. Alright let’s do this a few more times and get in a flow.
As Tenors we often live in the higher part of our register which sits between chest and head voice. This means we need to become masters of mixed voice techniques or else we will quickly fatigue our voices. Light or head voice dominant mixing is probably the most useful as it allows you to live in this higher register without getting too loud or harsh sounding.
Let's do an exercise that helps us find our light mix. Keep your head and neck in alignment and make sure to keep your jaw, tongue, and shoulders relatively relaxed throughout. Try it one more time with me before we take it up as an exercise.
Awesome work! May you sing as a Tenor with ease and efficiency
