Grew up listening to the Statesmen and many others when my oldest brother brought his records when he came home to visit. He would practice, teaching himself how to play piano and formed a quartet in the early 70's called the Centurions in Canada. These songs leave a unforgettable lasting impression which became a life long love for Gospel Music.

Praise the Lord! Great! Yes, those revivals we're fabulous. Couldn't wake till the time to go to church as a child. However, we can have revival in our souls today. It doesn't have to be a past experience. It can be a current joyful experience!

The only quartet that was better was this self-same quartet with Denver singing tenor, but I wouldn’t want to live on the difference. There is no doubting that JD was the lowest bass ever, but I think the Big Chief was the best, and certainly the best rhythm bass. Hovie’s pumping piano was as contributory to the Statesmen sound as Henry Slaughter’s was to The Imperials. I give Doy an edge over Gary McSpadden as the greatest ever baritone. Denver Crumpler was the classic Irish tenor, whereas Rosie has a more soulful sound, but as I said, my all-time best vote goes to Denver. And then there’s Jake Hess, not only the greatest lead singer in SGM history, but a superstar who influenced and attracted admirers from within and without gospel music. I have always loved ‘Sunday Meetin’ Time.’ ‘That Old Landmark’ and ‘I’ve Got News’ showcase the greatness of the Statesmen. If ‘Someone To Care’ doesn’t move you then, as George Younce used to say, your wood’s wet.

Would you happen to have any of Hovie Listers sermons recorded at the National Gospel Conference? Just thought I’d ask. I enjoy your videos! Thanks so much. God Bless!
