"Went way too far?" I honestly think you need to watch something other than Disney films. But here, let me help you out. A man toys with you while you think you're too helpless to do anything about it. The guy abuses and then rapes and kills your girlfriend right in front of you. If you're the type of person who wouldn't do anything about it, then I wouldn't want to know you. Because if. you had a hard time watching it in a movie, then god help anyone who you might date in the future. Your comment informs me that you wouldn't have the spine to protect the one's you love, especially if you could not withstand the thought of it from watching it in a fictitious scenario like a movie. Anyone who did that to my wife would face a much, Much, MUCH worse fate than some kid playing roulette with a gun with the rapist's/murderer's family. That kid went pretty damned easy on them. The only way for that rapist/murderer to learn his selfish lesson was to experience the same thing happening to someone that he loved. Otherwise, it was all meaningless.

@@Nick-ce6lt This. The film is a critique on masculinity and the way men view women less as human beings, but as pawns to be used to either prop themselves up or to hurt other men. The protagonist and antagonist both turn out to be viciously awful people.

@@JackisJack_ I disagree...because if he had just moved on with his life, forgotten everything, and dismissed the girl like she meant nothing to him, that would be a bigger criticism of masculinity. I also disagree with your assessment that how he acted in terms of getting revenge is an indication of how he views women, there are men who would act the same way if something heinous happened to their sons, daughters, mums, dads, friends, etc... The story was more about his personality and his trying to get revenge by hurting him the same way he was hurt. He cared so much for the girlfriend and didn't like seeing her hurt the way she was. That didn't justify his actions in the end though.

@@SuperLekan12 You seriously believe that learning how to cope with trauma, let go of the past, and move on while looking forward would be a critique of masculinity? Are you joking? And I’m sorry if I come off as offensive by saying this, but you have a very surface level understanding of the film. You’re just regurgitating the plot on a very barebones level without really delving into what the story is trying to say and critique thematically. The antagonist uses the main character’s girlfriend in order to hurt him and toy with him. He sees he is defenseless, so he inflicts horrific acts on an innocent third party for the sake of hurting another man. The woman has nothing to do with anything, but since she is important to the main character, she can be used against him. The film is trying to make men reflect on the way they talk about women when pertaining to insult fellow men. “That’s why I fucked your girl.” “That’s why your girl is ugly.” “That’s why your girl loves me.” You see what I mean? Men so constantly attack innocent women in an attempt to hurt the men they are connected to, and this is what the film is critiquing. It’s offering an extremely visceral, blunt, offensive representation of the types of dialogues and attacks that happen on uninvolved women almost daily for the sake of hurting men. The most ironic part is that both the protagonist and antagonist do this. They’re no better than one another. That’s the entire point. I would heavily recommend brushing up on your media literacy.

of course the family didn't deserve it. I think we can all agree with that. But that WAS the point. Because no matter how horrible the father was, he was willing to both die without disclosing his secrets AND die for his family's safety. The only way to truly hurt him was through his wife and daughter. And ultimately, that's what the protagonist wanted. He wanted the father to feel the fear and helplessness that he felt, and finally the loss of someone he loved dearly while being powerless to protect them. There was no other way to achieve any of that, without involving the one thing he cherished... his loved ones.

@@coledoucette5116We have no idea what could make someone ‘despair the right way’. A revenge filled brain will always get hyper-fixated on doing things the same way to the same person. The family members, for all he knew, could have been in on it, or maybe even sided with the father out of bias. A family isn’t exactly a place where justice reigns supreme. Only intimacy matters most the time for close families. Ironically, “I accept them for who they are because they are my blood”, contributes to the moral decay. The heartwarming family ideals become evil for an outsider looking in. Honestly, I personally believe that killing the family was simply part of karma (the eastern kind). People can’t control the evil a victim can do if you do in retaliation towards them. The father endangered his family on his own, so not all the blame is on the revenge pursuer. The family did not deserve the karma, but that’s what makes it messy. Underserved karma is what good people get as well.

Maybe the lead character was a lil stale at the beginning bc he was pretending to be a sheep When he's obviously enjoying spoilers a a lot Seemed like Elia was getting flustered a lot Chris seems comfortable when he kills the girl That twist that he wasn't as evil as he been pretending either It really liked how complex Chris was How I thought he was a sheep then he showed he's a psychopath to realize from his reaction to killing That he was neither a sheep or a wolf but a person No matter how depraved someone seems everyone was a child Everyone has people they love

Same as you I expected something different just going by the title. I didn't like the rape sequence, it felt very unnecessary. That aside I like it reasonably, the ending ups the ante and gives it more OOMPH. I just wish the beginning, middle had been tighter than what it was. The boyfriend who leaves them.. he was an asshole.

If I were to take my best logical guess, I believe that the rape scene in the movie was dragged on for so long on purpose. A lot of victims of sexual assault/torment that had come forward to speak about their experiences tend to mention how it felt unreal yet real at the same time, almost as if they were experiencing it from outside of themselves. The trauma and suffering they endured would have seemed to have gone on for hours, days, weeks, etc., even if in reality it were possible to have lasted a few minutes. Some even go on to say sometimes that it felt as if they were stuck in some kind of "viewer's" position, forced to watch themselves as it is happening to them, like an out of body experience. As if their brain is desperately trying to convince them that the abhorrent events weren't happening to them, but to someone else... Back to the subject of the scene, my theory is that the duration of the take and its bg music choice was intentionally directed and filmed as a strategic and for the most part effective way to deliberately make us uncomfortable; by putting the audience in the poor girl's position, to evoke empathy and tragic grief for the victim, as well as to also fan the growing flames of horror and outrage towards the rapist, which also makes us want to see him get some kind of equally horrific punishment done to him as he deserves. The scene was necessary to cause the audience to side with the underdog antihero in the thirst for vengeance and justice, no matter what we felt about his character, his actions, or his personality as an individual. The irresistable desire to watch an unforgivable evil person deservingly get crushed beneath the weight of the irredeemable sins he had willfully committed against an arguably undeserving, helpless victim that had no chance of defending herself... Such that the film brilliantly goes on to question us for in the third act, causing us to have mixed emotions of the outcome. We are forced to ask ourselves, "Is this justice?" "Was this right?" "Was there any other alternative?" Despite us eagerly reveling in the antihero's retaliaion, yet jarring us greatly as we end up witnessing him commit sadistic and violent actions beyond what would be accepted as equal. In a way, as we question and judge this film, it questions and judges us and our ways of thinking. As the old quote goes, "As he who stands and gazes into the abyss, it too gazes back into his very soul." But.. maybe it could also be just another fucked up movie my desensitized brain chose to watch. Lol

I stumbled across a clip of this movie on Facebook. Thought it might’ve been something I may want to check out. Saw some stuff about the ending and the r*pe stuff in the middle and was turned off from it, but searched for videos that may make it worth watching. Def don’t really have a desire for this one, for the same issues that you addressed here solely centered around those two scenes. No matter what that dude did, becoming the monster you’re out to destroy doesn’t solve anything, nor does it undo the evil that has already been committed. It’s just super messed up that he would bring the daughter into it, do what he did to her, then kill her in cold blood. Nah, I just can’t. The real world is evil enough, I don’t need to see someone take the life of an innocent just to try to get revenge for another evil already done. If their goal was to show that revenge just leads to more evil, death, and regret, then I guess the movie served its purpose. Using a teen girl as the catalyst to see that he went to far was the wrong choice tho

The main character I didn't like either but only because he was the POS that was doing his buddy dirty with the dudes soon to be wife. Not many can empathize with him seriously, but I also didn't sympathize for the woman either she had equal part in the blame. The tragedy is that ending. Wow that ending just blew me away. I think the writers really captured something with this one. That situation was totally F*d up in all ways. The only innocent parties in the entirety are the other 2 actress's at the end. This movie will make you think. It will really make you reconsider the whole situation, sure you can empathize for the dude being wronged but then you also know he is also to blame for his part in what transpired. That was a domino effect and the ending smacks you upside the face. This movie does a good job at illustrating how revenge is not clear cut and without consequences. It also exposes within ourselves some not so easy to deal with truths, that being should we "cheer" on any part of this whole thing. The truth is we shouldn't, all the actions in this movie are dark and motivated from other terrible actions and the ending just exploits that whole thing. Sin conceives sin, there is no good fruit to come of it. Also the title is a huge metaphor, the last shot we see before credits roll is an untriggered mine in a field. That ending was the real explosion.
