Wow, GOD is good. Let me tell you two what happened. I have been working on replacing this bathroom faucet for like 6 hours. One problem after another I've dealt with. I finally get to the flange and thought, "Yes, the finish line!". Nope. I was running rampant on KZitem trying to find a solution. Nothing. So I gave into the idea of just getting a whole new $150 sink. Something told me to make one last push to find a solution and BAM, I found you two. The exact same problem. Can't thank you enough, but I'll try. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, AND THANK YOU.

I love this couple! So gentle with each other as they work their way through this task. Several observations: You don't need to get any "grime" or anything else out from under the flange (the part that is extracted at the end). All that stuff is largely dried plumbers putty that seals the flange against the sink hole. You don't need any kind of solvent. It will crumble easily as you remove the flange. Once you've loosened the large hex nut that attaches the drain pipe to the sink, continue to unscrew it until it reaches the end of the threaded part of the pipe. Then lower the gasket down to the hex nut and smack the bottom of the pipe to break the putty seal. Then grab the lip of the flange with your vise grip pliers, and unscrew the flange from the pipe. No need to risk damaging the sink with a hammer. Also note that witch hazel is the plant extract dissolved in alcohol. Cleaning the remaining putty and so forth can be accomplished with a soft scrub pad, avoiding anything that may scratch the sink finish. Finally, I would install a whole new brass drain assembly. Throw away all the old stuff. It's probably been compromised. Consider avoiding the lever type of pop-up stopper in favor of a "tap to seal and unseal" type commonly used in tubs. They are much easier to keep clean as there is less mechanism in the drain for hair and gunk to accumulate in the pipe. Keep up the good work. Figuring out how stuff works is a great experience!

I watched at least 5 other youtube videos, and they all made it look so simple to get that flange at the top unscrewed. But I couldn't just twist it off. I didn't even use the witch hazel, just the hammer trick, and wow, it worked like a charm. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

This flange removal method worked! What I had not understood is that the narrow little flange alone would come off. I thought a below-counter part of the pipe would unscrew. It worked with just a couple splashes of Listerine and a dozen hits of the hammer. I can't thank you enough!!

Hickerson clan, you helped me even though your method didn't work initially...by suggesting witch hazel to break up the corrosion, (just FYI witch hazel isn't caustic to break up rust) I went with your other idea, WD-40 and after chipping my sink with your suggestion to hammer(unseen spot) , I grabbed the lip on top with locking vice grips and a plumbers wrench on bottom and the drain snapped clean off instead of unscrewing...a win is a win! Just FYI most sinks don't unscrew right at the top like yours, most are almost halfway down the drain. ..and those will rarely unscrew if the installer used putty on the threads. Thanks so much for starting me down the path.
