Montana, 1867. In the sweltering heat of a brutal high plains summer, a group of civilian contractors are busy cutting hay to be used as feed for animals inside the walls of the US Army’s Fort C.F. Smith. Suddenly, the soldiers standing guard sound the alarm: They are under attack.
The men, soldiers and civilians alike, retreat to the sparse cover of a makeshift corral-turned-fort.
For the next roughly 12 hours, they will fight for their lives against the attacking Sioux, Cheyenne, and Arapahoe warriors fighting under the command of the legendary Red Cloud. In the fight that ensues, many men will die, and those who survive will forever remember the day of what will come to be known to history as “The Hayfield Fight”.
