If you've wanted to hike to Flatiron but lack time, Siphon Draw Trail makes a very respectable hike itself. Given the right circumstances it can have quite an amount of water running through. Curious? So were we!

Whenever we camp at a new location, we like to take advantage of the scenery and seek out a trail to hike. During our recent stay at Lost Dutchman State Park, the Siphon Draw Trail was recommended to us by a ranger as a great experience that would fit in our time frame. So we set off on our way early in the morning the last day of our stay and found a new favorite place in the Phoenix area.
The Siphon Draw Trail is one of six trails available at Lost Dutchman State Park in Apache Junction, Arizona. Many sites rate the 4 mile out and back trail as moderate to difficult depending on where you choose to stop and turn around.
The first mile or so is relatively flat with little elevation and views of grassy areas which can be carpeted with wildflowers in the Spring. The trail will appear be cut off when you approach a metal fence, however, you will pass through a gate and continue on your way. The Siphon Draw trail is unique as it passes through not just Lost Dutchman State Park, but also Tonto National Forest and Superstition Wilderness Area.
As you hike further towards the canyon, the elevation increases, the cliffs loom overhead and the trail changes from a wide dirt path to more rocks and boulders. Eventually you will reach Siphon's Draw, a basin in the Superstition Mountains that, depending on the weather, may have water trickling down through it.
When you've reached the basin, turn around and you will be provided with an amazing view looking back towards Phoenix. In the distance, you can see Camelback Mountain as well Four Peaks. Closer to the park is the town of Goldfield, an old ghost town which has been turned into a tourist attraction. You can't miss it as a train whistle can be heard occasionally during your visit. We heard it several times during our stay. It really adds to the atmosphere!
From the basin one can continue on to Flatiron, however, we did not undertake this part of the trail on our visit due to lack of time. Most hikers agree that continuing on the last mile to Flatiron is where things get more difficult due to lack of clear markers illustrating where the trail is in addition to a more serious elevation gain. We hope to continue up to the top of Flatiron in the future so make sure to check back!
