I really don't understand this "he's a monster" mindset unless you're willing to accept that your character is ALSO a monster. Going into foreign territory and slaughtering the indigenous people and fauna, looting what ever you please. Like all those children in Rennala's library, Killing the enslaved miners doing idle work for smithing stones If you completed the volcano manner questline then you betrayed numerous tarnished that were only guilty of helping other tarnished like yourself, like Tragoth. And at the end of Sellens questline you HAVE to choose to betray one of your former allies, either her or jerren. Maybe you didn't do it on all your playthroughs; but you had to have atleast once.... just to experience, just to see, just to KNOW what happens... in that sense, you seek to become All-Knowing aswell... And You NEED to betray Gurranq to beat the game in order to unbind the rune of death. At the end of the day, the road to Elden Lord is not paved with diplomacy and peace treaties, a crown is warranted with strength. Morgott said it best himself *"Thy kind are all of a piece, pillagers emboldened by the flame of ambition."*

@@sasaki999prothe comment is old but I would like to reinforce that that is a PRETTY interesting point. even in varre's quest, we are the ones that betray him, I really think more well-done quests (gameplay-wise) would enrich the game so much and wouldn't make the lore and the gameplay so separated from each other and thus adding more immersion to the game, because personally, I think that one of the things that kinda kills the new game plus for most people is the boredom that comes from only looting and killing everything that you see in such a massive world

As I see it there's two possibilities for Gideon's actions and speech in the end. First is that he actually peered into Radagon's will and mistook it for Marika's. Of course that would mean that Gideon doesn't know that Marika is radagon, and I don't know how to feel about that, this secret is right up his alley. The second possibility, which I'm leaning more towards, is that he actually did peer into Marika's will and what he found was so absurd that he was convinced it had to be a fluke. I'm basing this on his death monologue where he says that "a man cannot kill a god", which is marika's goal as we learn from hewg. The idea of slaying god was so impossible to him that he convinced himself it was a diversion to keep the tarnished fighting amongst themselves for eternity. In the end it's poetic that the man with the most information out of all people would reach the wrong conclusion.

It's Radagon's symbol that blocks us from entering the Erdtree. If Gideon received a message saying that the Tarnished should keep fighting instead of entering the Erdtree, it seems likely the one who put the barrier up in the first place sent it.
@icarusablaze1831

I think Gideon peered into Radagon's will and misinterpreted as Marika's will, since it's a secret that Radagon and Marika are the same entity. Radagon is the one who'd rather preserve a fractured world rather than allow a tarnished to change things.

I love your interpetation of Seluvis' motivations in his falling out with Gideon, that's way more in character for both of them than the commonly assumed love triangle! Regarding the Queen's will, I agree with others when they say Gideon probably glimpsed Radagon's will and mistook it for Marika's. Aside from the fact Marika really seemed to have wanted a change of management (Hewg's curse, Gideon's comment about "the Queen's sorrow" for the Haligtree's predicament etc...), there's also the fact that, in the same vision, Gideon glimpsed "the end that should not be" in Marika's thoughts. After looking at a couple of different localisations, I agree with Sophie from SinclairLore when she suggests this "end" is the end of knowledge: a finite world with finite experiences, which would be the apex of Radagon's desperate quest for completeness. Given what happened to Marika and Radagon, I also doubt any of them is in a sane spot right now. Lastly, I think it's worth considering why exactly Gideon is so loyal to Marika, so much as to distrust the Two Fingers even at the apex of the Roundtable Hold. I suspect Gideon used to be Marika's spymaster and one of the original Tarnished along with Godfrey and Tragoth (a veteran of the Giants War). Gideon was both "Sir" and "All-knowing" when he was buried, long before Grace brought him back to life. I have this running theory that a lot of Elden Ring's characters echo one another, in a narrative device that's dear to both Miyazaki and Martin. I'm starting to suspect that, just like Gideon and Nepheli echo Marika and Godfrey, so Patches and Tanith echo how Gideon feels towards Marika. But this last point is truly unhinged speculation on my part.

I think you misunderstood Dolores's character. Seluvis is shown to haaaate Gideon. Why do you think he would go first after his best friend and then his adopted daughter? Gideon already knows about Seluvis' schemes. He's already disgusted by him. This narrative further deepens when you consider Gideon also hates Albinaurics, and Seluvis is implied to be a puppet himself controlled by Pidia. Gideon himself appreciated Dolores' criticism and input. She was a St Trina priest. He needed her to get him info on Miquella.

I personally think in the last fight Gideon was stalling us and everything he was saying was just a distraction. Why was he stalling us? Simple he was there with Godfrey. My read of the events is that Godfrey showed up and Gideon immediately glommed on to him. The reason is obvious, Godfrey is at a level Gideon can't begin to stand on. Rather than fight the once and soon to be again Elden Lord, Gideon could serve as his council. Gideon was either instructed or decided to stay behind where we find him to deal with any stragglers while Godfrey gains an audience when we roll up. Gideon isn't sure he can beat us based on everything he knows about us but he feels sure we can't beat Godfrey. So he tries to talk us out of it. Even in death he just thinks we will only get in the way. Why do I think this, Gideon is standing waiting for us when he run into. He isn't trying to get anywhere he's waiting for folks to walk up. There is nothing between Gideon and Godfrey therefor there is no reason Gideon wouldn't have advanced if he believed he could be Lord. New Tarnished are taken to the Roundtable Hold when they arrive in the Lands Between and Godfrey in his cutscene admits he pretty much just got here. His arrival sparked Gideon to abandon the hold rather than stick around collecting info like he said he would. Also there is a weird technicality in what he says when he dies, about a man not being able to slay a God. Godfrey is indeed a tarnished but let's not forget that Godfrey was a trailblazer, not just the First Tarnished but also the First Demi-God. I think this counts in Gideon's assessment.

one cool thing in his post demi god dialogues I hear was an interesting comment about Miquella and the state of the haligtree "So The Haligtree, now but a husk... I heard speculation Miquella embedded himself in the Haligtree, but before he could finish, someone cut the tree open and absconded with his infant form. Indeed, it seems those words held weight. How vexing. That the All-knowing didn't have the full story... Perhaps the Queen's sorrow was justified" Gideon made it seem as if the Haligtree was actually a plan of Marika's; Maybe to start anew after disposing of the Golden Order and Elden Beast. Miquella and Radagon were said to be close. Miquella was working on ways to oppose the outter god's influence. I wonder if it was all connected somehow. the Tarnished, the Haligtree, Marika breaking the Elden Ring...I think Radagon was also in on it of course being under Marika's control initially but fell under the control of the Elden Beast when Marika was crucified on the broken Elden Ring so it wasn't even him fighting us or trying to repair the Elden Ring it was the Elden Beast working him as a puppet. *or* he got cold feet last minute and tried to rebel against Marika's plans. Gideon was described as being scared of what he saw as being her Vision and Hewg mentions something about the terror of her.. Reasonable to assume Radagon also was like *nah fuck that* and tried to make friendly with the Elden Beast.
@TheHonoredMadman
Жыл бұрын
This is very interesting. Especially when I cross reference it with this running theory I've had that some commenters have been helping me with, so basically the idea was that Marika created radagon to replace her as vessel, then charged hewg with building a weapon that can kill a God, radagon science project worked alittle too good and he tried to stop her from breaking the ring, which trapped them both in the inner tree, but I wonder if her plan had worked, like if the Tarnished came back and killed radagon with hewgs weaponry, where would she be? Free of the greater will entirely, so it stands to reason that the haligtree, which was this new alternative to the erdtree, and miquellas own issues with golden order, it's very possible the haligtree was marikas ides or inspired but marikas ambitions

Makes plenty of sense that Gideon would have everyone do the dirty work - there can only be one Elden Lord after all. Every Tarnished is fighting endlessly to become that, incapable of dying and always coming back unless they lose their grace and die permanently. When he decides there's no point in becoming Elden Lord anymore for whatever reason (This was the divine plan to struggle all along/you can't kill a God/he saw Hora Loux or the Elden Beast and didn't wanna fuck with him, etc) he just straight up dies and never comes back. Nothing to fight for, no more guidance of grace because in the end his reason for existing became to perpetuate the struggle.

We're there to fix the ring. At least, in most endings. So why is he trying to stop us? This question has to be dealt with even regardless of Gideon, though. Sir Gidoen is an interesting character with the weakest boss fight and somewhat unique weapon. Lowering both the user and enemy resistance with an AOE with the whole eye motif is somewhat cool. Just a flat character in the grand scheme of things, plus his servant/bodyguard is lame. Lame weapon, armor and no purpose other then invading you. I wish there was more fleshing out on his motives, but then again I could say the same thing about Maliketh and I really him despite his incomplete questline. It would be funny if you return to the round table only to see Gideon waiting in his room giving you some excuse while you cannot attack him since game rules.
