As a young child I never understood why my parents were so captivated by him. Only now as an adult myself, I can appreciate the depth and diversity of this very great man!! Sir Peter is simply one of thise truly legendary people of our time, so sorely missed (yet needed in today's world!!) whose mantle will never be seen again. RIP, Sir!! 👍

This was a great reply. I also did not understand the appeal of Peter Ustinov that my parents had. As an adult, I now ADORE him as a human being and actor.

I recall seeing him from time to time on shows like Cavett and Carson. Always admired his grace under pressure, his calm bearing and considered cadence. He was always aware of himself.

I had forgotten how beautiful Selina Scott was. She didn’t really make her name in chat shows, bless her... but what a privilege to sit down with Peter Ustinov one of the worlds more interesting and talented men.

You can't just learn a language by listening if nobody explains things to you. So he must have listened to his dad discussing the subjects before or after the broadcast. My grandparents spoke french when they were fighting so the children wouldn't understand. The rest of the time they spoke English or German. He is such a product of the English public school system. Playing a character in French or German and receiving the culture price is wonderful.

Ustinov always made a big deal of him being somehow capable of learning foreign languages at the drop of a hat, but let's face it. He probably grew up hearing German, French, and even Russian spoken by his close family members. It's not as if he wasn't exposed to those languages on a frequent basis as a youth.
