Thanks! The first clear understanding of the little thumb screw I've seen. Others were confusing. All I want is a ball head that stays in the position I put it in without sagging.

Glad it helped! This is my day-to-day ball head and I frequently use it with a Sigma 100-400 and it works very well for that. I do have a tripod collar on the lens too help balance the weight out. I believe the lens along weighs about 2.5 pounds/1155 grams.

The Sirui clamp is only mostly Arca compatible. It will not take thicker variants of AS plates such as the AS on the Kirk AS collar for lenses. Found out the hard way.

Sounds about right, probably explains why it works well for my L-bracket in one orientation and not quite as secure in the other.

I use to be such a fan of Sirui! The only thing I have now is a couple of Sirui Monopods. I do love those. They make decent tripods, but nothing exceptional, IMO. YMMV

@@JeffreyTadlockPhotography Oh, I’m not going to take anything away from FLM, really good tripods. But, I would suggest checking out Leofoto. They are introducing a new ‘Pro’ line of tripods, with improved latches, and FOUR position leg stops! They claim to have even better and stronger CF in the tubes. I just recently acquired a ‘Ranger’ LS- 364 C tripod, and man are those legs stiff! It is better than my ROBUS, which I have been disappointed with. Take care! (. I am not sponsored by Leofoto, well, yet…? ) 🙂

I have several friends that use Leofoto and all seem quite happy with them. If I ever got tired of FLM (or decided to pick up something else to review), Leofoto would probably be what I looked at next.

I have one of these. Build quality is impressive but the rubber on the knobs started slipping on mine after a couple years. I ended up buying something of higher quality. Have not used it in quite some time.

Mine is still doing well, but I haven't got the 2 year mark yet. What did you upgrade to?

I do MACRO shooting of color reversals(digitizing all my old Kodachromes) which requires the ball head to position 90 degree to the side at its extremes. My camera is an A7R IVA with a Sigma 105mm macro lens, and my current 20 years old Manfrotto tripod (6kg max capacity) ballhead (4kg max capacity) seems not to be able to handle it(Any people walking-by will result blurring image) do you think this ballhead will do good with the 1:1 macro shots? Since it's 90 degree to the side which I assumed is very heavy over the multiplied fulcrum leverage. I also have my eyes on the Sirui W 2204 tripod, do you think this setup would do ok for the macro color reversal copying? thanks

These are always the hard questions to answer! But - I use a Nikon z7ii and a Sigma 100-400 which works out to be a fairly heavy camera/lens combination. I attach that to the ball head with the tripod collar on the lens, but since I have a 3rd party collar, it won’t me rotate it to portrait orientation. So I do rotage the ball head to the 90 degrees to the side. I feel like the ball head does just fine, no slipping and holds things quite well. Sirui does make a K-40X with an even higher load rating, but I’ve never felt the need to consider it (if anything I’ve more considered could I get by with the smaller K-20X). I haven’t used any of the Sirui tripods. I’d just make sure it has a good load rating as well. (I use an FLM CP30-S4 most often with this ballhead). I chose it partially for weight savings and size for travel and lots of hiking.) If you are ony using it at home/office/studio, might be worth a slightly beefier tripod just to be sure you don’t get that shake when doing your macro work. Hope that helps!

Is it comparable to the benro quality or better ?
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography
2 жыл бұрын
The closest head to a Benro I have used is the one that comes on a MeFoto travel tripod. But based, on what I do know about Benro in general, I would say probably comparable quality if comparing similar load capacity ball heads or something in their Triple Action series of heads. I do prefer the friction adjustment on the Sirui though compared to the dedicated knob for friction adjustment on the Triple Action Benros.

Jeffrey, are all the knobs with rubber?
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography

The knobs are with rubber. Mine haven't slipped yet and I've had it out in snow and rain, so it seems secured well so far, but I suppose that adhesion is something that could go wrong at some point. Thanks for watching!

@@JeanDanielGagne - The panning knob does not have rubber on it, it is metal. Only the main knob and the knob on the arca-swiss release have rubber.
